customer wants me to stain the spindles on there deck
solid white but they recently sealed the spindles with cabot.I know you are supposed to be able to put a solid right over a existing stain ,I am just wondering if I should at least try to strip the stuff off the spindles or does it NOT really matter.

I would try and strip first. You may find that a lot of the old stain will come off. If not at least the surface will become a little ruff and should help with the new stain sticking better.

Thanks Dan, that's exactly what I did. I wanted to provide a little bite for the stain to adhere to.And I also wanted to make sure that there was no moisture trapped inside the spindles that could make it's way out and cause the stain to start peeling. As everyone knows the # 1 cause of a soild stain failing is moisture!
