Typically black smoke indicates too much fuel and or not enough air.

Causes could be restricted air flow to burner, air band out of adjustment, bad fuel, low voltage to the burner motor, to name a few possibilities.

If you are getting flames out of the exhaust your fuel pressure is probably too high.

I can better diagnose your problem after you answer a few questions: What model p/w do you have? 12 volt or 115 volt burner/ Wayne or Beckett burner?

 it is important that you correct the smoke problem before you soot up your coils, de-sooting coils is a NASTY job!
