What type of chemicals are you using? This is a question that comes up all the time, with no clear answer. Some hood chemicals come with a thickening agent and one has to add cost and ways of applying the chemical. I use just sodium hydroxide with a little surfactant and it works fine. This is not to say that I am happy with the chemical action, it is cost effective however.
