    Deck Doctor

Is the name 'Deck Doctor' a franchise? It seems like every city has one.... just curious, if someone incorporates that name or starts a franchise, does that name have to be relinquished by everyone who currently has that name?

New to the Deckwork side of things

Oh, and when working on fences, be aware of shadow box fences... they're more labor intensive and take longer to do than board on board.

New to the Deckwork side of things

No offense taken. The average deck in this area goes for about $475. It depends on the market you're in. During slow season (like end of June and all of July), we tend to lower our prices a bit so we can cover our monthly expenses (truck, advertisement, insurance, etc). I think the...

New to the Deckwork side of things

Newbies tend to use water pressure only (no chemicals) and as time goes on, the more experience you get, the more you learn about what chemicals work and what doesn't. Take a look at previous posts about pricing, bleach (to use or not to use is a big debate), wood brightener, pros / cons of...

    Thank goodness for Behr

We like Olympic for tints, been lovin' Wolman lately. Used to like Valspar, but having a hard time finding it... Behr tends to peel.

    Oil Based vs. Water Based

Can you use the pad more than once (can you wash them)? Do you need more than one pad for each deck?

    Condo Proposals

We've lost 3 bids for condos mainly because we state that we 'spray' 'brush' and 'roll' the sealer. After the fact, we've been told that spraying is a no-no, they're all worried about over spray. We only pump spray the floor, to save time from dipping in the can repetitively. None of the...

    Oil Based vs. Water Based

We've always used oil based tinted sealers, but while at Sherwin Williams, the salesperson stated that water based tints last longer than oil. TRUE? Comments.

    Thank goodness for Behr

Several years ago, we did a Behr deck and it peeled by the following year. We called the manufacturer and was refunded for the product. At first they wanted the UPC code on the back of the can, but they reluctantly refunded us after a couple phone calls.

Planning on starting my own power washing business

Hold the phone. The Canadian GOVERNMENT will give you a loan for power washing equipment??? And, you get free health insurance too, right? The USA is having problems with illegals... would you mind some Americans coming over your border???? Our government isn't giving us much of anything...

    Ads in local paper

We decided to do a 8" ad in our local paper along with inserts, full color, 2 sided, 8 1/2 x 11. Anyone have suggestions on what to put in the ad? What would work best... photos, our logo, pictures, detailed info on us, etc???????

    Profit ratio

Deck Works, Seeing we live in the same area, do you find a lot of guys using Penofin by you? Do you prefer Deckscapes over Olympic? If so, why? We've noticed that the guy who 'does a lot of condos' out here tends to use Deckscapes (used to be Cuprinol). Not sure why, it's a bit more...

    Profit ratio

We've been noticing that repeat customers are tending to call in the 3rd year, not every other year. It appears that the customers are still happy with the tinted sealer we use, so they're waiting 3 years (although we recommend 2 years). That kind of stinks 'cause we've only been here 4...

    Clearing the deck

We used to move things... until about 4 years ago, we put the guys planter back and he complained we put it back THE WRONG WAY. We've also been told, once, that we scratched a glass table top. I'm pretty sure we did put the planter back the wrong way, but can't imagine scratching a glass...

We have 2 guys out her charging $40.00 A GALLON for the blue label Penofin, and, of course, you shoot a bit high on the amount of stain you're going to use.... they're making a profit that way too!

    Profit ratio

A ton of newbies appeared in the local phone books and newspapers this season. LOTS of competition.... We've pumped up the advertising quite a bit already and noticed that the phone books around here are NOT priority when looking for power washing / deck cleaning people. More...

Help! Bid on 50 decks ASAP

Its an all or nothing job.... I think. Nothing is in writing though, and we've had another condo screw us over by changing the amount of decks they wanted done. So, thanks for reminding me, we will need to write that all the decks need to be done for that price. And, since we've been living...

    Water recovery... necessary?

There's a guy in town who doesn't recover his water. He does commercial work (store fronts, banks, etc). The business that hires him, are they responsible for making sure he's recovering the water? He does a bunch of local chain stores, we were surprised to see he isn't recovering...
