Dan,
You dont need truck driving school you need a CHEVY, your trailer is simply reacting to being hooked up to a ford (HAHAHAHAHA).
I pull a trailer all day long (20' enclosed) but I pull it with a CHEVY 3500 dually 454 big block. Ok, enough with the razzing.
If you really dont know I'll see if I can help you. First make sure your side mirrors are set so that you can see clearly. When backing keep in mind to get it to do what you want it to do everything is backward (with us rednecks everything is backward from the start so its easy) if the trailer starts heading toward your left side turn into it and it will straighten out (little adjustments are best, dont oversteer) Keep in mind that right is left and left is right and if you can do that you'll be fine until you can afford a CHEVY, then it'll start acting right. Good luck and I hope the info will help, I would go and try out backing in a empty parking lot at night to get use to it but watch out for the lamp posts. LOL

Dan, your ford should handle the load but you may have to re-arange you setup, I pull a 16 ft. lowboy with a 1500 series Z71, it has been doing a fine job for over 2 years now. I have a TUFF hot water machine that sits on the very back and 2 hosereels then in front of that a 550 gal. water tank, In front of that 2-55 gal.chem.tanks, In front of that extra 5 gal. chemical buckets. you want to make sure that you got your water tank sitting over the axels. When you get everything set up your bumper should only drop down just a little bit.

It takes a little time but you will get used to it. When you get good at it with the trailer you will be qualified to enter a driving contest when unhooked and driving your truck alone. Don't want to scare you, but I hope your trailer can handle the weight that messed up your frame. Good luck and happy driving!!

Hey Dan
just think of it as your pushing the trl. around instead of backing it up.

Don't feel bad ! I pull a 14ft tandem with my Ram 2500 van and I cant even see out the back window because of my carpet cleaning stuff! Then my neighbor parks his truck on the side of the road right in front of my driveway. I would like to slam my trailer into his truck sometimes!I have to back in between my wifes van and my 4inch pipe basketball goal with mirrors only! Sometimes I take so long backing up my neighbor lady next door comes over and flags me! You'll get it soon!

Dan,
First off don't listen to those red necks, if they ain't done nothing right yet! If they did then they would be driving Dodge Ram pick ups.

"You dont need truck driving school you need a CHEVY, your trailer is simply reacting to being hooked up to a ford (HAHAHAHAHA)."

Now that out of the way Rob is right, do it backwards and like he said a very little bit of adjustment at a time, I pull a 27 foot 5th wheel and goes where you want it to, but when I got my trailer set up for pressure washing it was a whole new game, almost crashed my garage wall a couple times till I got the hang of it.

Dan,

Sorry, i have to agree with LightningClean. Chevy is the only way to go. Yes Jon, us backwoods country fellas know our trucks. They are our home, bed, bathroom, storage, etc. Yep, they are quite an investment. Seriously, you might get an overload leaf spring put in your half ton pickemup truck. Even if you have the trailer well weight distributed, you will eventually wear down a half tons springs. Use a GMC 1 ton now, but first two years used a Z71 and had to beef up the suspension so when i was cruising down the road, i wasn't pointed towards the sky. By the way, that can be really fun sometimes. Back home, on the ranch when we were hauling in round bales of hay, you always knew when you had a REALLY heavy bale because when you lifted it up it would raise your front wheels off the ground. That was a challenge hauling it, had to use the right and left brakes to steer but what fun it was. If your Ford gets that bad, people will get out of your way.

Hey Craig,

Guess I should have added my Dodge Ram is 3/4 ton diesel long bed, also have Firestone air bags in rear since I found even though Dodge claims it can handle 11,000 pound 5th wheel the ride is not a level ride. I think we all know what happens when the rear end sags!

Never owned any GM truck, but have owned Fords in the past.

I don't think it matters much which brand truck you own so much as it does being set up right and is the proper tonnage for what your hauling. All have 4 or 6 wheels and get from point A to point B.

One of the important things to me is proper and timely maintenance of your vehicles.

I agree about the proper maintenence of your vechile that Job posted (by the way i have pics of Jon's set up and it is "GRAND"), he should be proud, but still I'd have to say Jon you could lift you head even higher in a CHEVY!
Now I totally agree with Craig with the eception of the BATHROOM part. Yuck!!!!
LOL

Have fun guys and Dan be carful popping wheelies in you ford it can get dangerous.

BUT the ford is a piece of crap :<: i have to really gear down to make a hill and the sad part about it is i just got this trk. in dec. and i wasn't really planing on using it to pull a trailer.. so as you may guess it's
a"show trk." loaded nice family extended cab
and 6 cyld. to boot.. is ther any possiable way to do something to that engine to beef it up? a computer or something? i really hate to buy another trk. but i might have to i always had chevy's but i thought i would buy a " real trk." for a change.. but it's no work trk...i think i set the trailer up properly 425 gal. tank slightly towards the frt. p/w in the rear, another p/w in the frt. (home made ) but put's out 3200 psi ,and one 55 gal. soap in frt. and one 55 gal. towards rear.but that sucker dropped the bumper not a whole lot but enough to see it,, HELP ME HERE WILL YA.............

Hello Dan,

We always have had our equipment on a 2-1/2 ton truck chassis. If I entered the url correctly you should see a picture of our main truck. http://www.tps-inc.com/tpsredsm.jpg

If you would like a list of spec's let me know.

Appropriate tounge weight for a trailer is approximately 10% of the total trailer weight. Anybody pulling a heavy trailer (over 2000 lbs) needs (and its probably a state law in your state) trailer brakes of some sort.

An ideal situation is for the tow vehicle to weigh at least as much as the trailer. While it is nice to have a bunch of power (454 and PS diesels) to haul a heavy rig. It can be done with 'normal' powered vehicles, if they are geared a little lower and you don't plan on pulling a lot of hills.

See Jon?
Lorin did not say anything about the little bitty Cummins that you got in your truck.

Only mentioned the mighty Powerstroke.

That is what I drive. Although the other truck is a Chevy C-60 with a 350 and an automatic. It does not have a lot of guts, but it does get there. Just not fast, it has a 7.17 rear end in it.

Jon,

If I'm not mistaken, I think Lorin's part two of Lorins article on trailers is going to be in PWNA's Water Works, not Cleaner Times.

Mike,

Excuse me for getting things mixed up here.

I think you are right. See what happens when you drive a cummins diesel!

Thanks
