A question for Tim Smith

No I have not. I hope to specialize in roofs and decks.

Why do you ask?

Let me give you and the board some background on me. I have approx. 12yrs construction experience. In 1993, got tire of construction and went into the Air Force as a C130 Jet Engine mechanic. During my seven years of service, I got a dual degree in Accounting & Business. I currently work as an accountant at a university. I own an operate a home inspection business started from ground up. I have one employee in that business. I mainly do the books, marketing, and all the other overhead stuff. First couple of years, I did all the inspections, I do about 20% of the inspections now.

I see a huge market for power washing in this area. I hate working at a desk, so I plan to leave the accounting job this summer and run both business full time. Yes, I will be cleaning, sealing (the whole 9 yards) in my power washing business as well as have an employee. I enjoy working with my hands. I am so excited about this business. I want to use quality chemicals and good equipment. A bunch of people around here with a sears power washer and box of bleach, blasing property away with pressure. I want to do it right. I don't want to clean your deck, I want to restore it. I want to help take this industry to the level of respect that it deserves. Power washing is far from a monkey with a water hose. There is a lot of knowledge to gain to produce quality work.

I may ask some simple questions, but bare with me. I hope to contribute to the board with my background in accounting and business. I read this search engine hours a day. I have research all about the business. I take my hat off to you guys. This business takes a lot of dedication and the ability to learn a lot. You almost need to be chemist.

Sorry so long. Thanks for your time.

Once again, curious to why you ask? Is this not a board for beginners. If not, I am sorry. The board has been worth gold to me. I really have learned a lot.

Reason I asked was, you seem to ask alot of questions sounded like you were going to write a book. Don't take offense to this. Good luck.

if i had the know how and backing in your head, i sure would think about it
year round work dry feet back wont hurt only 1 or 2 guys working for you
lots of on location service also[not everyone is mobile]
i think your lookin at the wrong end of the horse.
air cond. in the summer-heat in the winter theres no one around me that
services and sells what i want got to drive an hour to get acid[hf] and cant find [ph]
my soap i get shipped $$$$$ but local is junk and bigger$$$$$.
closest wrench to me is an hour one way.

I did not take offense to it. I understand your concern, thats why I gave some history about myself. Who knows, I may just write a book and if so, this board and its members will be mention. Thanks for all your post in the Search Engine. I enjoy reading your comments. I appreciate it greatly. Don't misunderstand me, I am here to learn so I can own and operate a power washing business, not write a book.

Ron

I would be interested in learning more about your comments. I truly enjoy working with my hands as well as the outdoors, but I am open to opportunity. Thanks

Tim,

I have a hunch you will do fine in whatever you do.

Ron,

I did have too chuckle about the percieved views of running
a p/w sales and service business, I started as a contract cleaner
many moons ago, when someone told me a similar story, I sold the
wash business and opened a sales & service business. Sometimes I
remininsce on how I had it easy as a contract cleaner.

Go figure,..... human nature I guess, the grass is always greener on the
other side! :D

i guess i was thinking more on the lines of internet sales you service what you sell
there are some real big guys that seem to just be middlemen[enviro****]
its a guess but i would say they must do the largest sales of pressure washing
products in the country? at least from one place. im sure as a group c-tech must sell
tons more.
Has the internet made it easier or harder for you? it used to be you had only a couple of places in a 100 mile area to buy a wash unit, now i can shop and compare with 50 diffrent machines.

Tim,

I would like to invite you to our round table discussions on the 23rd of this month here in St Charles. You may be able to get some more info and meet some of the people in this area that are in the business. It is open to anyone and will be held in a local hotel from 1-4 pm. A point of contact is Russ Cissell and he can be reached at 636-946-2663. We currently have around 15 people attending and some are coming from other parts of Missouri.

Please feel free to ask anything on this board.

Hope you will join us for the discussions. Also, the home and garden show is the end of this month at the America's Center in downtown St Louis. There will be several power washing businesses with booths.

I'll be there. I appreciate the opportunity.

A topic that I would like to discuss is how to promote the industry as a Professional Occupation.

Give me a call sometime - 573-243-1777. not toll free!

Thanks
Tim
