Josh I do not sub but,

The way it works is the contractors pays you a % of the job(s) done not you paying the contractor a %,unless thats the deal. The % will depend on alot things as in who supplies this and that in the job, some will offer to supply all the chemicals and more...........need more info for the contractors to help you, what are you suppling in each job.

They are several different ways a fellower can sub out,,,,,,,,,,,I pay you or you pay me.....or....you pay me costomer pays you.

I SUB MY SEALING WORK TO A PAINTER IN RETURN FOR HIM SUBBING ME ALL HIS PRE-PAINT WASHING. I GIVE HIM MY PRICE FOR WASHING AND THATS WHAT HE GETS FROM THE CUSTOMER. SAME THING WITH HIM. THEN WE JUST 1099 EACH OTHER AT THE END OF THE YEAR. MOST OF THE SUBBING I DO FOR OTHERS I GIVE 10% OF THE LABOR.

Justin is mostly right on the money except when he said "Then I would provide the work and the training" As a general contractor hiring sub contractors you CANNOT provide training. This is a Federal regulation, Don't mess with them.

also make it clear that you do not hold out taxes - its up to the sub contractor to do so. Its a write-off for you.

Never train, or provide much at all. You have to show a separation.

I sub a lot with my different businesses - the main worry will be quality. Sign contracts, so when the customer call you, you can call the sub contractor and hold him too it. ALWAYS make sure they have liability insurance or you will be responsible.
