Asphalt sealing

Hello everyone,
I keep getting inquiries about sealing driveways when i'm doing residential work. Does anyone do this or just refer them to the asphalt companies.
I've seen home made spray rigs at equipment auctions wondering how well they work.
Anyone know the good and bad between latex vs. petrolium based sealers. performance vs. cost

Just looking for ideas to expand my services
Hope everyone is busy.

Adrain,

I have some experience with sealing driveways because a good friend of mine does this for a living and I have helped him from time to time. This is a totally different business from pressure cleaning. It is also a seasonal business just like pw. If you live in colder climate areas.

The equipment if you intend to spray or wand can vary from $1000 to $10,000 for a set up to do this work. If you have access to used equipment just make sure it has been maintained correctly and check the hours on it...These rigs have a similar set up to pressure washing rigs.

As far as the asphalt sealer used. You will want to stay with a good petroleum base sealer...Not the store bought stuff in 5 pails at your local Lowes or Home Depot.

I also have a friend who's father in law is in the business and sells such equipment. If your interested I can give you his name and number. But since your not from around my area. You might want to check locally.

Just my 2 cents worth. Hope it helps some.

Good luck!

Hi Adrain
We've been sealing driveways for 20 years.Unless you are thinking about sealing surfaces larger than driveways or sealing driveways full time there is no need to invest a lot of money in equipment. The equipment I use is a grass trimmer, pressure washer, leaf blower or broom,a four inch paint brush for cutting in,brush/squeegy applicator, small hand trowel or putty knife,a caulking gun and a long stem paint stirrer that fits in the end of a hand power drill. We buy the materials from our local hardware or lumber stores. We start out by grass trimming the edges and cleaning out any cracks that are in the driveway. We then clean off the driveway with a leaf blower. Then we wash the drive down with the pressure washer.Using the blower we dry out all the cracks and then apply the crackfiller. Tubed crack filler for small cracks using a caulk gun (preferred)or buckets of crack patch that is applied by hand trowel or putty knife for the larger cracks. After a twenty-four hour drying period we apply the sealer. When done properly you can seal a driveway without leaving a seam. The amount of time involved depends on the manpower used and experience.
I hope this has been of some help to you.
RICK
