Best Washer for Cleaning Wood Siding

Hello,

I'd greatly appreciate any advice as I am quite new at this. I am shopping for a power washer primarily to clean off the green mold on my painted gray wood siding. The house is two stories, 3200 sq. ft, with a walk-out basement.

The siding needs to be repainted as it is faded in all of the sunny areas. We moved here nearly 4 years ago and the house is 13 years old. I am pretty sure no siding maintenance (except a few boards replaced) has been done in all these years. Because of the costs, we need to wait a year or two before painting, however, the mold needs to go now! I also would like to clean up our 13 year old large untreated/unsealed deck - but don't want to spend too much on this because it probably needs to be replaced in a few years.

I am looking at a Craftsman 2900 psi Gas Pressure Washer with 7.0 hp Briggs and Stratton Engine with 2 3/10 gpm (only $499 at Sears) I worry this pressure may strip the paint off the siding, however, figure I need a relatively high psi to reach the second floor. Any advice???

Thank you,
Michelle

Michelle,

Do a search on the board using words like GPM, wood cleaning, house cleaning....you will find many of your answers. You also may want to have a professional come just give you a quote.....many are free. Using the wrong pressure or the wrong chemical could cost you far more in the short run than you might foresee.

Your right, you are going to need a ton of psi to get to that second story and remove that mold. Not only that you need to make sure the wood gets very clean. I would spend the little extra to get 3000-4000 psi. [devil]

Why would you need PSI?Honestly this is poor advice to offer to anyone who wants to wash a house(high PSI on most home exteriors will cause damage).PSI may be the ticket for hood cleaning but not for housewashing. With the right housewash mix this house could be rinsed with a garden hose.

I do housewashes and I do decks. I use very low pressure and Citracleen/Hypochlorite or RM to strip. I was just being agreeable. She'll get a valuable lesson about using professionals versus trying to do it yourself. [hello]
