Cedar roof moss

Hi;

I've been looking at some houses that need my help desperately. They've got cedar roofs that are the most beautiful shade of green that I've ever seen on a roof. They low and even walkable piches (less than 4:12 I reckon). My question is, what is the best low pressure method for knocking the moss off of these roofs? Will oxygenated-bleach (disodium peroxydicarbonate)do the job?

Maybe a better question is: how would you attack the job?

Thanks and have fun,

The first thng that you need to determine is the condition of the shakes. If the roofs are truly covered with a heavy moss build-up and not just mold and mildew than there is a chance that the shakes have deteriorated to the point that restoration is not advisable. Generally speaking the steeper the pitch of the roof the better for a wood roof. The fact that these roofs are a low pitch is leading to the fungus growth as leaves, debris, water, and snow sit on the shakes easily. If the shakes are sound and the fungus buildup is not to heavy then a percarbonate based detergent will loosen the growths and allow you to clean the roof at low pressure. If there is a heavy build up of moss than a sodium hydroxide based clener might be needed to loosen the fungus. If you do clean the roof it is essential that you make any repairs needed to the shakes and apply a good preservative treatment.The cleaning of wood roofs is truly a specialty and should not be attempted without formal training or research. A great place to find information on proper care of cedar roofs is The Cedar Shake and Shingle Bureau. If you would like more info on how to properly care for cedar roofs, I would be glad to help.You can call me anytime. 262-251-1737 I hope to hear from you.
