Chlorine Is A Deadly Chemical. Why Do People Say They Are Cleaning Roofs With Chlorine? I Buy Sodium Hypochlorite @ 10.5% And Dilute It Way Down For Roofs. Chlorine & Sodium Hydroxide Make Sodium Hypochlorite. When You Buy Sod/hypo @ 10.5% You Are A Long Way From Chlorine. Does anyone agree? Tim

Um, yeah. Most chemicals are deadly under the right conditions. Sodium hypchlorite , even diluted down for roofs, can be deadly. Almost killed me this morning when I stepped on a wet spot and dang near slid off the roof!

When I first started, we used 35/65 chlorine/water and it worked pretty good. There were areas that would have to be re-treated, but that still happens some times. I use the 50/50 because it puts me right in the middle for adjusting for tile or shingle and it keeps a good strong mix in the tank for other applications as well.

One thing to keep in mind is the possibility that the chlorine we're using in FL is probably considerably more fresh due to location and turnover of product. That might have a bearing on your results, as opposed to Mike's too.

Being a newbie I assume that you pump the 60/40 mix directly onto the roof using Sureflo pump from a tank or do you downstream it? Just curious how you get this on the roof.

i use 40/60

for a standard stained house i use a 40/60 mixture. i like it to be a little weak because most of the time it's all i need. it's rare that i have to mix it stronger but there are times that i may reapply in small areas. most of the people use a shurflo pump but some use a booster pump or even a gasoline powered pump. because of the caustic properties in chlorine a downstream injector is not really recommended since the chemical is not friendly to brass or steel fittings. you'll find that some people use an x-jet nozzle which keep the chemical from ever going through your wand. i've use that myself with success on steep roofs. depending on your psi will determine on what type of hose you need. if you're using a good garden hose i suggest you remove the metal ends and install the plastic ones.

good luck,

rando

hey ya know thats a thought ,i buy mine by the drum like most i guess and i will use 55 gallons in no more the 10 to 12 days maximum.....but i dont know how long it has been in the warehouse before delivery , i usually stick with around 60/40...and get good results, but i am a penny pincher when i can find a way ,but not at the customers or my reputations expense

Thanks. Is there a place one could find some pics of these shurflo tank setups? I assume it is a dedicated tank and was just curious what size you pro roof cleaner guys feel is large enough to get through your typical day.

Don, can you email me some pics of the Phelps wand? bleemus@hotmail.com
I have seen pics of your big truck which are very impressive but I imagine your wand would work for a small timer like me as well using a shurflo pump on a smaller setup.

Appreciate you posting these. I am curious why you have the 90 degree angle at the head. Doesn't that limit the distance you can throw the hypo or am I missing something. I think I expected to see some sort of straight lance but then again I am a rookie.

Cheers.

That particular wand is used for walkable roofs. All that has to be done is the addition of another 90* elbow, then it becomes adjustable for whatever application you want.

Well let's see, if you're "Cleaning a roof with Chlorine", you must do the following:

You must:
Have "CHLORINE"
Have a dirty roof.
Put the chlorine on the dirty roof.
The roof then becomes what I thought would be called "clean"...
Then, we rinse :)
What was once a "dirty" roof, is now "clean", with "CHLORINE", hence...
"CLEANING A ROOF WITH CHLORINE"...
