cleaning brick inside

I am new to this forum and need help....I am a paint contractor doing a commercial job that has brick inside in a building that is being renovated. I need to clean it up (it won't be painted over). The gen contractor suggested to me that some guys powerwash it and use a shopvac to clean up water. What is the best way to tackle this one? I am so worried about getting water inside , esp since I haven't done this before. Is there a way to clean it (chemical) without having to wash it? what precautions are needed if the best way is to wash it, such as prep/materials needed to put down, etc. please help! thanks

This seems like a perfect time to sub this out to one of the guys on this forum that does washing in your area, you could always mark it up 10 or 15% and still make a decent dollar without having to do anything but the right thing..could come back to you later on with a nice painting job the washer doesnt want to do,, we call that networking

just some food for thought,

I have done some interior basements with mold/mildew problems on block. Little soap/ bleach, a good squeege, good shopvac with the filter removed. May have to work slow so that you don't flood the place, but certainly not rocket science. Good to have some people there to remove the waste water so you can make time on the job.

Is there paint on the brick now, or grease like it were in a kitchen or something? I would think what it is dirty with matters. I would be freaked out by the water too, but you could drop a blue tarp tape it to molding at the bottom (I'm hoping there is molding or something and make a little collection area so the guy with the vacuum has a chance of getting the water before it runs too far.

Steam cleaning it might be a better option.

The suggestion of subbing out to a specialist would be right, just finding the right specialist is key. There isn't anyone under "Interior Brick Cleaner" in the Yellow Pages-- well I didn't actually check, the yellow pages are in the other room right now.

Hey NJ WashingGuy, I havea question about the moldy basements, but I don't want to hijack the thread so I'll start a new one.
