Well the cold weather is coming again...

I have lots of chems sitting outside in the garage. Have stored more this year and was wondering how you guys keep your chems from freezing over the winter. My wifeee would be upset if I drug all of them inside and stored them in the closet!

Hmmm, This sounds like a job for Gloria. She won't have a wife to worry about.

Now for another possibility, if they are stored in an enclosed area, then You can put a couple of incandescent light bulbs in there or a small heater. Just make sure nothing can catch on fire.

YES keepthe replys coming because I still have some chems setting outside . Well so much for me getting into a warm truck this winter. My garage spot will go for storing the chems. Hmmmm wonder if I can talk my wife into letting me use her spot and she park outside?
Not in this life time. Guess that remote starter for my truck will really come in handy. Later Tim

This solution might work for some of you but not all depending on how much space you have in your yard.

What about buying one of those storage sheds and equiping it with lights and/or a small heater like Scott mentioned?

Then you can park both vehicles in the garage.

Just an idea

Does anyone know what will happen if the chemicals and sealers freeze? Are they any good once they defrost?

What about purchasing one of those small portable green houses? In direct sunlight it should more than keep the chems warm... I just not sure that they could retain the heat overnight. Might be worth looking into??? If you have sodium hydroxide around it's probably already frozen. The stuff solidifies at something like 50 degrees F and takes forever to thaw. Our supply froze last year before we turned on the heater. It worked fine when it thawed this past spring though.

Store chems in an enclosure and use a heat lamp. It has to stay pretty cold for an extended period for most chems to totally freeze(in concentrate form). The only chem we have had trouble with ruining after it froze is degreaser and that may have just been a bad batch to start with. We had not used any of it yet so we really didn't know. Our dealer replaced it for us anyway! Thank God for good reps!

Den, Here's one solution to your cold weather problem. Stop by your local, Commercial Electrical Supply store and ask them for ( Heat Trace)it is used in factories, refineries and power plants for protecting exposed piping from freezing.

It looks like 110v extension cord but has high resistance. You just wrap it around what ever you want to protect, plug it in and put a quilt or blanket over it to hold in the heat and your set.

The stuff comes on a spool just like extension cord.

You will need to have a basic under standing of electricity to maintain safety for yourself and family.

You'll need to cut the female end from a 110v cord and splice the heat trace to the supply side of the cord and retape for safety. Make up as many as you need.

I would recommend checking the MSDS on your chemicals for boiling points and buy one heat trace that you can use for all of them.

Heat Tape? I don't like the stuff, and don't trust it. If your do use it, don't insulate over the tape, don't cross it over itself, don't lay anything on it. If you ever get to my community, I will show you the Hi School. It is much nicer than the old one. I will also take you to the Fire Department and show you the picture of the drain pipe that was the only thing left standing after the school burned to the ground. Heck of a fire, and I was out of town cleaning exhaust hoods and missed out on about 20 hours of overtime. The cause of the fire, a heat tape.

Dear Mr. Hicks,
Nothing, man made is infallible. I've just retired after 30 years service from Florida Power & light, Putnam Plant. During my time there I can't recall any problem with "Heat Trace" it was applied over the piping and then covered with tubular CelluTex, a foam rubber type insulation.
FPL has an excellent safety program and I'm sure that if Heat Trace posed any danger to their equipment they would have removed it from the property.
We don't experience the extreme cold down here that you do in Oregon, and that could be where the problem lies.I believe that Den, is located in north Georgia and their weather isn't that much different than here in north Florida. Anyway, thanks for the warning. It is this kind of exchange that will keep us all alive and our equipment on the job making dollars.

Sincerly

Ron

I guess I've heard it all once or twice but I guess the most unique way I've heard to keep your chemicals from freezing is to use an aquariam heater. You know the tube style that hangs on the side of the tank. They have a temerature adjustment and they are cheap. I haven't ever used one but from what I hear it works...
