cracked windshield

One of my fleet customers called me to ask about a cracked windshield. I saw it when i washed, but figured it wasn't my fault, so didn't mention it. They asked if maybe my operations may have broken it. I doubt it, but I was wondering what any of you have experienced? Have you cracked shields with pressure or cold water on a hot car? They say they're not looking for a scapegoat...but I like the account. Should I report it to my liability carrier?

I have heard a rock chip can do this but how every seen it happen in hump teen years of washing. They say if the windshield in cold inside(AC running) and you apply hotwater to the outside a rock chip can cause a crack.Like I said I've never seen it happen but have heard of it happening.

I would call around and find the cost of replacement,
it would probably make more sense financially to not
turn this in to your insurance.

(Depending upon the cost of windshiled.)

Do you feel you are responsible, or fear losing the
account if you don't pay for windshield?

If you put cold water on a really hot windshield,
or hot water on a really cold windshield it is
possible to crack windshield.

Like Larry I too have heard of this happening
but I have not personally seen this happen.

I have had it happen a couple of times. Usually, it is an extension of a preexisting crack, or there was a small rock chip somewhere in the line that it extended off of. San Luis Obispo would not seem hot enough to me to have it happen, though. I have only had it happen on days that were above about 110.

I would have to agree with Scott. The only way I could see you being the cause for it is if you somehow accidentally released your trigger while you were washing, hit the window with the end of the wand and gave it the chip, and heat causing it to fracture from there. I think if anything it was already fractured, and maybe the introduction of your wash water helped it along. If its a good account and you would like to maintain a good relationship with the fellow, you could go halfsies on it and credit your half against your washing so it actually will cost you a lot less. Just something to think about....:)

Thanks guys,

I'm sure I saw the crack when i washed the car. I just figured...bummer, but it's not my problem. Anyway, the client seems ok with it...I've bent over backwards to attend to their concerns. It's a 500 per month account...so i like it. BTW, it was in paso robles and about 100+ degrees ...but my water doesn't come out that cold...you know heat of compression @3500psi

Thanks again for the response. It's great having you all to bounce stuff off of.

Years ago when I was parts mgr in GM dealerships, I got to receive new vehicles. If the glass was cracked, we took a pencil and traced the crack. If the crack was caused by a rock, the pencil lead would hang up in the divot caused by the rock. That was a transportation claim. If the crack was caused by stress, the pencil would not hang up in the crack, and that was a warrenty claim.

I did the pencil thing...and there it was, a snag. i went to my customer to offer one half compensation in free work just because i wanted to be a team member. imagine my elation to find the rock pit! i showed the customer with the pencil and saved myself $100.
i'm so thankful for all your advice on this matter. i learned.
