What application are you using?

Depending on the application what you want to do is find a setting that will allow you to adjust the height and width, but at the same time and equally - in other words it will constrain the proportions.

Check the help area for that. Also, some graphic files are larger than others. You might wan to export it to .gif if it is a .jpg for example. The resolution may drop a little, but depending on what application you use, you might be able to ajust that too.

I use Fireworks by Macromedia for all my graphics.

If there is not a note about constraining proportions, look for reduce file or something along those lines....

If it is a .bmp or .jpg or an Adobe file format, convert it to .gif. It will be smaller.

Bmp files take up the most space. Gif are usually used when a picture has motion. Jpgs take up the less amount of space and are smaller in compression size. However you have to adjust the pixels to change a pictures. Also you can adjust the resolutions much like using a scanner. When I scan a picture I usually use 72 pixels so that it will fit on the screen anything above that usually is off the screen.

There are two files formats that are typically see on the web for example, and are considered to be "standard" formats. One is the .gif file the other is the .jpg file. I can scan the same photo, and the .gif will be smaller, and have a faster load time than the .jpg will.

It goes without saying that if you adjust the resolution, you will change the quality of the image file. Lower resolution, smaller file. Higher resolution larger file. Also, when a photo is scanned at a higher resolution and then converted for example, you may fine that the resolution will drop, leaving speckles in the photo that need repair. (this is one of the reasons I love Fireworks - It fixes it) :)

If you are wondering about any photos you have scanned or imported, you can create a foler and then convert one. You might even try creating different files with the application you use.

Some applications do handle files a little more efficiently than others do. And some won't always create the format you want. I hate it when that happens.....

I use PhotoImpact 5.0 it cost me around $75.00 at Bestbuy I can do anything to a image including writing on and changing the looks and appeance. It is true about the gif most of your icons that you click on are gifs however better quality comes from the jpg and with my program I can compress a jpg down below a gif.

Sounds like you found a program you like that has some good features. I don't know if you have worked with .png files, but the quality of the .png's is really good as well. The standard format Fireworks uses is .png.

One of the features I really like in Fireworks, allows me to work with an image, and as I size it it will tell me the load time based on various connections, like 28.8, 56, 14.4 or whatever. Comes in handy since you can then decide if you want to try the image in another format or crop it further or whatever.

Are there other features in Photo Impact that are helpful that you think other might enjoy reading about?

Beth I bought this software when I was creating websites it will automatically convert a picture file into html. It will let you make the picture spin, roll, add effects such as fireworks or anything you can image. It is the best software I have found and believe me I have about 7 diffent programs here and I only use this one. It has an explorer feature so that you can browse your computer you can also make moving pictures with it. It has I believe 15 differnt formats to save a picture with and you have your choice of compression and sizes to chose from. It is very simply to change the resolutions and pixels with also. I dont know what I would do without it I love it.

Way cool! Thanks for sharing those features. I do those things in Fireworks too.

What did you use for web page generation? I first started by learning to code by hand, and used notepad. Once I felt comfortable, I tried a few other things. Tried Front Page, didn't like it. Tried Hot Metal, didn't like it. Then tried Dreamweaver, and was hooked.

One thing I can't stress enough, provided you have time and patience, is become familiar with html and learn to code a little. There are always times you will need to be able to read the code and fix things and your frustration and ease of use drop alot by doing it. Or at least mine did...

The winter months is when I typically have time to dig and play around with applications and discover features I have not fiddled with yet. I'll spend hours futzing around on something new.

You can count on my fiddling and posting things I run across as I do, in various areas. I think it's a great way for us all to get a feel for different applications, and also for the kinds of things they do. Lots of folks don't know what different applications do, and let's face it, when you walk into a computer store it can be overwhelming. The more we discuss things here, the easier it will be for all of us.

I to tried Frontpage and didnt like it. I tried Netscape also didnt like it. I have the Hot Metal 5.0 and I do like it because it will let you do tags and html and switch back and forth between them. That is what I used and the PhotoImpact 4.0 came with it but I upgraded to the 5.0 and glad I did.

I have met a number of people who like Hot Metal. Dreamweaver also lets you switch back and forth.

If you are ever curious, you can download it free for 30 days. I have been known to test drive stuff for the fun of it. Although, not as much as I used to, and mainly in the off season.

A friend of mine also likes Netscape, but I wasn't wild about it (had forgotten about it...). It's funny, but alot of it comes down to the comfort of the user, not just the features. Some users don't mind a few extra steps, others, prefer it if it means doing things in a logical way.

Does anyone remember the old DOS word processors???
I had Wordstart 2000. I gave no thought to having to put in commands just to make it print. Guess what? The same delimeters are the basics of HTML today. Strange isn't it?
