I have a couple of car lot accounts and am having some issues with getting the cars dry and looking good. Getting my own DI setup seems to be cost prohibitive and it is getting the time of year that even a chamois is not working very well. Has any body out there tried useing a leaf blower to blow them dry? Any suggestions would be greatly aprieciated.

how much are you getting per car is the price drying them off two from what I have seen some use a jet dry in the mix and some use a spot free chem
most car lot washers i have seen do not hand dry and most of the cars are spot up after they dry

An RO system would be ideal, but way too expensive for just a couple of accounts. We toyed with running an inline water softener system, but also difficult. There are some commercial "spot free" additives you can put in your water tank, but they don't guarantee success either.

We used to do 2,000 - 3,000 cars a week for several dealers with 3 man crews (1 washer - 2 chamois). At this time of year it's almost impossible to get cold cars dry enough with a chamois and not leave streaks & spots. Besides, it's G*@ Damn cold on the hands! I suppose you could use a commercial, gas powered blower to blow off the water. The bigger challenge will be to lower your clients' expectations. Hey, it's WINTER!! I would recommend a "winter wash" program. Spray only (cold not hot) just to get off settled dirt after rain, snow, plowing, etc. Only need one guy then and you could charge A BIT less, but make more money. Temps should be 40 degrees or more. DO NOT use hot water!!! You can crack windshields and the hard water will calcify on the windows & paint and you will have very unhappy clients.

We quit doing cars over 3 years ago. Way too much motion for not enough money. Good Luck!

thanks

I only have three lots total 250 cars and I am only getting ave $1.75 a car. Generally I have a kid drying for me with a chamois but between the weather and not being able to keep him busy enough, it is hard to keep help. I am ready to give the car account up. The local water is as hard as the road you drive on (just about) I run a water softener but it doesnt quite cut it. This was my first year in POwer Washing and I bid the acount to get busy my YP ad just dropped so I hope that with some flyers and cards posted around the area there will be more other projects. Thanks again any help is greatly apprieciated

I use a portable DI system when washing my truck. Also for cleaning windows. Provides a spot free rinse.

The leaf blower will blow dirt onto the bottoms of the cars on either side of the one you are drying. Use a DI systems for spot free water and a dryer. This is the only way you will make the cars look good enough on the lots. We run a 2 man crew Monday-Friday and wash between 2000-2500 cars per week this time of year. In the spring and summer we run a 2 2 man crews and wash between 3500-4000 cars per week. We do very good in car lot industry.

We have several DI systems available through Hydro Tek:

The CD20002V is an engine driven spot free system and high pressure washer in one. You now have the opportunity to add exterior building wash down service in addition to touchless and power brush window cleaning. The dual feed system allows you to wash with ultra pure water or tap water when spot free is not needed to extend filter life. An onboard T.D.S. meter monitors filter life and ensures ultra pure results. Spent dry filters are disposed of eliminating the need to rent DI bottle.
