F & P stain on cedar deck

Wanted to get an opinion on using this. New deck in North Jersey.

The builder wanted to use Behr Premium, but I'm trying to pursued based from what I read on this forum.

I've also read about mixing colors. 1 cup of Natural per gallon of Golden Pine. I've also seen suggestions for 50/50 redwood and golden pine. thoughts.

Contractor also said mixing the stain is a bad idea.

I hate being the customer quoting the Internet forums to the builders, but I just heard so much negative talk about Behr.

Thanks!

IMO, both are garbage. You can mix colors without a problem as long as they are the same brand and formula of stain.

I've been doing decks for ten years. Over a thousand decks, over a million square feet. I'm a wood snob and old school. Oil is the best thing for wood. A deck finish has to be easy to maintain and easy to remove. I use a product called baker's Gray Away and another more available product Oil Based coatings for Wood, Sealant & Stain: Restore and Protect - Armstrong-Clark Co.. What makes Wolman and Behr similar is their use of acrylics in a water borne formulation. That is the antithesis of what I mentioned above. Very hard to remove, they peel, they dry out the wood and with maintenance coats they layer thicker and thicker, darker and darker.

Thanks for the info, I really appreciate it. I had no idea F&P was acrylic, nowhere does it mention that. I def. Want oil semi-transparent. Thanks again.

Ken's got some good advice for you there. Sounds like your contractor doesn't do much staining. I'd recommend you find 1 that does. If you're already tied into him, ask him to sub it to a stainer.

I can't imagine a wood care professional using Behr or F&P.

Mark,

Just about all commercially available products have acrylic in them, even the oil based products. You'll be alright, if you maintain it. I am assuming you are a homeowner? (I ask because that obviously would give you tight control over the maintenance)
