Deck Works

Curious as to whether people on this board are full timers or part timers. I am personally a part-timer. Working after work and weekends. This is my 3rd season. The $$ is tempting me to go full time.

I've been doing this part time since 1995. The extra bucks are too good to pass up. I've been teetering on the brink of wanting to go full time, but then, I've got a good, steady job in the computer biz, which has adequately paid the bills for sixteen years.

My thoughts have been that alot of powerwashing work could disappear if the economy in this country goes further south. Some things could probably wait to be cleaned, at least in the minds of wary consumers.

I've been at near capacity of what myself and three part-time helpers can handle. The next step is to invest in another trailer rig, and get it out full time. It is a big expenditure, and there is no turning back. So for now, I'll keep at it part time, and at least have an ace-in-the-hole.

Full or part time

Have been at it full time for over 10 years now. You really have to be dedicated to working hard all summer and banking money for the cold that winter inevitably brings- we still stay busy with our fleet washing but there are times when it just can't be done.

Full timer, I retired from the Air Force in 94 and have only been in the business a short time. Should have done it years ago. Can't beat working for myself and not someone else.

My question here would be what determines if your fulltime or part time? Is it the amount of hours you put in on average per week? Does it mean if this is your only source of income then it makes it fulltime? Can you you have another job and still consider this Fulltime if you are doing it 5+days a week?

I don't know how I could answer this because I do have another Job and I still put in 4-7 days a week doing this. I guess I have two fulltime jobs. What a bummer. Or is it?

I started part time last year and business picked up so much early this past spring so I jumped full time. Not a smart move, about 6 weeks ago I finished my last job and have not had a call since. Advertising has just about left nothing in my pockets. I sent out flyers and got 1 response for cleaning a store front every other month. Things just haven't went well so I had to get another job installing satalite dishes. I'm still trying to get jobs but they aren't coming in like they did last year.

As a matter of fact,My 6th year anniversary comes up on sept.20 I did my first deck on this date in 1995 but I did research for at least a year before this and started advertising probably in august 1995 .I actually did not go full time until may 1996,but I can tell you I will never work for anyone else for as long as I live!!!!
With the experience I have gained I could start a business in any field I feel comfortable in and probably be successful.

Been it the business for 7 years 5 years full time. When people start out on a business adventure, I feel they should do it part-time first. Make some mistakes and see if you can handle the pressure of running a business. I live in Wisconsin I have seven months of making enough money to carry me the whole year. It was rough the first couple of years when i went full time. With a wonderfull wife and children (God Bless Them) we have seen an increase in business every year. My secret is the only competion is myself I determine if I will succeed or fail.

Charlie,

Right on Man.......I liked your last sentence: "The only competition is myself. I determine if I will succeed or fail"

Never better spoken.

Jumped in full-time head first and have not looked back since!
But I did spend many months studying, talking and learning about things.
I had worked with wood quite a bit, so was o.k. with the do's and dont's of decks and fences.
Grabbed my first washer and learned how to clean vinyl at home.
And pretty much have picked up roofs, driveways, etc. along the way...no regrets yet!

(actually there is one...I sold my first truck a couple of moths ago, and really miss it due to sentimental reasons)

Must say that this board has been a major contributor to learning new and better things with all the varied opinions and preferred methods we each have/use.

So thanks to everyone for sharing!

I'm sure we all owe at least an ounce of our successes to everyone else on-line here.

Full Or Partime

I PUT MYSELF THROUGH FIRE SCHOOL IN 93-94 WASHING FULL TIME. I GOT A FULL TIME POSTION IN 96 AND HAVE BEEN WASHING HOUSES ON MY DAYS OFF EVER SINCE. I GENERALLY WORK 3 TO 4 FULL DAYS DURING THE WEEK, DEPENDING ON BUSINESS. I CAN'T REMEMBER WHICH IS MY FULL TIME JOB ANYMORE. THIS YEAR I MADE MORE WASHING THAN FIGHTING FIRE, BUT I WOULDN'T QUIT THE FIRE DEPT FOR A MILLION $$$. :burn: http://www.softwashing.com
