Steve, you're talking about a brake controller. You're right, you couldn't do without one. Basically, what the controller does is to vary the amount of electricity that is sent back to your trailer brakes. The more electricity sent back, the harder the brakes will be applied. So if you didn't have a controller, the brakes would slam on full everytime you step on the brake pedal.

I don't think any trailer shop would advise not using a controller. Like you mentioned, I too have to adjust depending on the weight in my trailer.

I custom ordered my trailer as well, opting for the extra floor joists, thicker plywood, and such. Accessories installed by the factory are much better because they are designed into the unit rather than adapted to fit. For example, I had D-Rings installed in the floor that have metal reinforcements built-in to the frame. The factory roof vent has a metal frame integrated around it rather than just a vent cut into the sheet metal roof.

BTW....how far are you from Spring Lake? I've got a good buddy there that's also been in this biz for quite some time, but he's been mainly part time.

I have a plain old open 16 foot two axle trailer without trailer brakes.I've been dragging it up and down the road fully loaded for several years, sofor sogood,no problems.550 gallon supply tank,130 gallons chemicals plus powerwasher,ect..The only thing that gives me a problem is wet roads which I do not drive on and if I haveta on wet roads I come to a slow rolling stop.
Trailer brakes will always be safer but that too depends on what your pulling it with, hopefully not a S10.
