Gum Removal

Is there any way to remove gum from concrete with a cold water unit? And when gum is removed from concrete with a hot water unit does it always leave a shadow?

Pressure from your cold water unit will remove gum BUT it is difficult. You also run the risk of etching the concrete trying to remove the gum with cold water.

Hot water is the best approach. It has been my experience that there is shadows in the concrete when removing gum.

Do you use a concrete cleaner at all?

If all you have is a cold water unit, then you just need to take a couple extra steps to save time & excessive water run-off.

1. scrape gum off concrete. We use little devil 5 in one scrapers inserted into a legnth of 1 1/4" pipe, pvc is lighter. It takes less than 3 seconds per spot.

2. Presoak gum spots with degreaser. Be sure the oil content isnt above 40%, it will leave a spot that looks like a oil spot (makes simple sense eh?). We use a mixture of d-Limonene, emulsifier, and dish soap. You can find other degreasers/adhesive removers at local hardware stores.
Use a turbo nozzle & hit spots before they dry up. Its al ittle slow if your a one man operation, but I always put 2-man crews out there & it is actually quicker than just hot blasting only. And most importantly it reduces water usage by about 70% which saves us time & resources in reclamation step.

Absolutely do not scrape the gum up
Wether you use a hot water unit or a cold water unit you will still have the shadow. the shadow will disapate with time from frequent concrete cleanings.
The diffrence between a hot water and a cold water is that a hot water unit gets the job cleaner and faster than a cold water unit.

Hot Water for Gum

Here is a photo of a sample clean we did on two squares of entry concrete for the manager of a local pharmacy. You can see the shadows on top from the gum that was "removed" by the company/person currently cleaning the storefront. Our technician cleaned the two squares on the bottom with a hot water pressure washer.
