When stripping a deck we do a test on it with HD80 in different spot and make sure it will come off. Sometimes there more then one product on the deck. Buy a 10lb from Russell Cissell and test every deck before you do it. HD80 has my vote 110%.

Wolman deck strip A&L will take all those products off. In 15-20 minutes it'll be bubbled up and will come right off with minimal pressure.

Don't know what hd80 is but it might be the cheaper way to go. The wolmans stuff is $30 a gallon.

Make sure its the A&L and not the regular. The regular won't do it.

Make sure you use a brightner after using the A&L.

I had to buy a can of Wolman A&L awhile back. It think I had to pay 45 bucks for it which I thought was too much as it really didn't do that good a job. Luckly I didn't have to do more that a few boards.

I have been seaching for something that works. I think regular paint n varnish stripper will work also but haven't tried it myself.

are u sure u used it right. i srtipped extreme of a deck that had only been there a few months with no problem. how are u appling it? i use a 20'' wide roller. ifound the brush didn't give good results. 15 min. after i rolled it on i could rub the stuff off with my feet. Maybe u should recheck and make sure it was the A&L. i also used it to strip concrete stain off a drive with the same great results. I even esed it to strip 4 layers of paint off a deck.took 2 applications. Is the stuff your getting in a gel form? Is it in a metal can?

chuck can you post the MSDS for the wolmen's you like so much?
It must look like $$$ spreading that stuff out at that price?
Sounds like reg paint stripper for furniture.

The Wolman a&l came in a metal can and I applied it with a brush. Maybe that was the problem. As I said I only needed to do a few boards and now that I think back it was tropitech that I was trying to strip. The Wolmans should of worked on that as I think it is all about the same.

After talking to most of the people that do wood restoration. Over the counter wood products, just dont give the customer the finish that will last.

HD-80 works great for stain and sealer removal, but I've never tried it to remove paint and I doubt that it would work. My cost per gallon is at least ten times less then the Wolman's stuff mentioned below.

For paint and primer (acrylic latex, varnish, or oil based) I use Savogran, Heavy Duty SuperStrip. It costs about $26 per gal and you can get it at your local Shrewin-Williams paint store. I've used this stuff on wood and porus brick with excellent results. Here's a picture of a brick restoration job I did this summer.

The paint around the window frames (from old shutters) is oil based. There was also latex paint under the ledger board going all the way around the house, not to mention drips everywhere.

EDIT: OOPS, I just realized that this is the Just Wood forum and probably not the place to post a brick restoration. Sorry.

Paul,
HD-80 WILL strip SOME (important word SOME) paints. If you are using it for stripping stains and have a job that requires you to strip paint, try a test patch. We have had success on some paints. We had one homeowner that had painted their deck... MAUVE. It did take several applications, but it worked. I don't know exactly what brand of paint it was, Rod asked but the homeowner could not remember and didn't have the can.

While I would not say to buy it for that purpose, I will say if you are using it for other things, try it. You might be surprised! (let it dwell a while... )

Beth

p.s. attaching a job in progress...

The owner parked it at rinse time. There was no problem, and she got a free car wash. :) We did it in sections. I believe Rod was changing tips in this shot, if memory serves me...

Ya know, I must be suffering from sleep deprivation, old age, or something... As soon as I read Beth’s response it occurred to me that the first wood restoration job I ever did with HD-80 was on a picnic table that had been stained Barn Red (several times) and then painted with oil based paint.

As I recall, I had to call Russell about this because I wasn’t sure if I was using the product correctly and/or applying too much pressure. As it turned out, Russell recommended another application or two, and that I ease up on the pressure.

If I had another job like this and I was using HD-80, I’d be a alot more patient, do as many applications as necessary, and keep the pressure around 800PSI.

Here’s the victom:
