What is the best way to clean a gutter?

Have someone else clean it.

spray and hose

Yes,depends on what the gutter is on.

spray and brush

Yes,depends on what kind of brush tho.

spray and scrub with your hands

Washing the outside of the gutters is different than gutter cleaning.

Gutter Cleaners clean the inside of the gutters. Washing the out side of gutters turns into house washing. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

The best method is hand cleaning using a gutter grabber. You can set a ladder in one place and reach in my case 12 feet in each direction so I can get 24 feet of gutter in one placement of the ladder.

Washing makes a mess unless you doing a whole house wash. Most customers have nice neat yards blowing with a blower or P/W is going to send crap all over everything. You'll spend all day cleaning up the mess you make no fun.

ANyway its getting real close a few rain days and I hope to see more and more calls. I am relying on the yellow pages but mite do some mailers as well as getting the truck lettered up.

If anyone invented a gutter vac that actually worked and saved time, I'd buy one. I do a lot of condo roof/gutter cleaning, and in many cases, the debris has to be removed by hand and bagged on the roof. Some of these buildings have fenced (and locked) courtyards in the backs, so cleaning from the ground with a ladder isn't an option, plus it's much more time consuming.

In other cases, I can just blow them off with a blower, rake it up, and bag it.

I own an awesome vac unit, but the vac pump is frozen up. Has an 8hp Honda engine, and a huge 125 gallon steel tank..........on an open trailer. 150' of 2 inch vac hose. It works great on everything but sticks. Works better the wetter the stuff is........it sucks it up furiously when its sloppy wet.

I meant to get it fixed this year, but I just ran out of time and money. Maybe next year.

what if you can't walk the roof, or not easily accesible with a ladder? I developed my own gutter cleanout system that lets me never leave the ground.

Ditto on seeing your setup Mike! We offer solid gutter cover installation but along with that comes the cleaning (YUCK) and we would love an easier way to clean out those nasty places that doesn't involve splatting blobs of wet leafy gradoo all over the place :)

The only way I have found that really works good is the old fashioned method....climb up on a ladder and scoop the goop out by hand. Of course a nice pair of gloves keeps your hands dry.

sorry didn't realize anyone asked me a question. I made a gutter hook and put a "T" on the end of it, put a 0 degree nozzle on each side, hook it up over the gutter and spray away. I can make one for you if you want.

Mike,
When you clean a gutter that way, doesn't it make a huge mess all over? How can you control the spray when the pole is extended beyond about 20'?

I just can't concieve doing it that way. I can hand clean a gutter so fast now, and all I have to carry is a ladder and some garbage bags.

I admit for really high gutters it would be nice to not have to climb ladders, but I only go 24' myself which isn't too high.

I have 20' high extensions for the vac as well...................they were cumbersome at times, but still worked.

I don't have any pics of the vac...........it is stored at my parents house because I don't have any room at my shop for it. Sometime next year I will get it repaired and put on a new trailer..........then I'll tell you all about it.

They cost several thousand dollars though...........not for the casual gutter cleaner.........

you clean it up. it is basically a time, money factor. You can spend a few thousand for a vac system or get up on the roof and clean by hand, or stay on the ground with my little hook and then walk around for 5 minutes and throw some leaves in a bag. Personal prefference I guess. Everyone likes their way, and I like mine.
