If the deck was not wet before you started applying house cleaning solution and worse yet was allowed to dry with chem on it, you learned a valuable (albeit expensive) lesson. On the brighter side, you get to practice deck sttripping and resealing.

Hi guys,
When preventing house wash from harming a deck or wood porch, is wetting it down all that is needed? Is there something more to do?

Wet it down and keep it wet. The more water you add, the more it dilutes your run off, the less problem you have.

You should never use bleach to clean with anyways. Bleach only removes mold and algea from hard non porus surfaces and does not penetrate porus surfaces to be effective. Bleach is also very harmful to you, your pets, your landscaping, and everything else, hence this situation. Granted most chemical solutions should be treated the same, wet things down, keep them wet and not let dry untill it has been well rinced.

I hate to say never, but 99% of the time, I'm right there with you.

Bleach, like any other chemical is perfectly safe when used properly. Just like gasoline, when used properly it is very beneficial to us and used everyday. Used improperly and it can cause problems. Bleach when used improperly can cause problems.

I use bleach for all my house wash and roof cleaning work. In fact it is the number one chemical recommended for cleaning siding, roofs, some composite decks, and other surfaces we clean on a daily basis by the manufactures.

As for the question about the wood deck, protect by tarping or prewet and keep it wet if it is to come into contact with bleach. Or, just clean the deck and make more $$$$.
