Importance Of Changing Engine Oil

Oil Change Recommendations:

Briggs Vanguard engines:
Change engine oil after first 5 to 8 hours of use, then every
50 hours of use.

Honda:
Change engine oil after first 5 to 8 hours of use, then every
50 hours of use.

Kohler:
Change engine oil after first 5 to 8 hours of use, then every
50 hours of use.

Some say every 100 hours, however as almost all pressure washer
engines are operating under full load conditions, more frequent oil
changes are important.

Above chart shows oil viscosity recommendation for various climates.

We have seen too many engines die an early death, due to lack of
proper maintenance.

Important post Mark! Can't say enough how important it is to change out the oil more often.

Whats your thoughts on Liquid cooled Engines as far as changing out the Antifreeze from that Radiator?? I'm under the old school of thought that its best not to do that because of the potential of the radiator now leaking after you put in the new Antifreeze because a hole that was by some sediment can now re-appear because the Radiator was flushed out.

I had that happen to me years ago on my car when I drained and flushed out the radiator then put in new antifreeze. I had to put alot of "Stop Leak" in it afterwords that in the end I had to replace the radiator which I did myself back then. Because of that experience I never change out the antifreeze in my cars or powerwashers that I have with Liquid cooled engines and I never run into problems in that department. I'm curious to hear what your thoughts are on this.

Im not sure if this has been mentioned before but it helps to run the engine for a while (5 minutes or so) just prior to performing an oil change. This heats up the oil, lowering its viscosity and allowing you to more effectively/easily (and quickly) drain the engine. The run time also suspends any sediment in the soon-to-be removed oil which might otherwise build up at the bottom of our engine crankcases and become re suspended when the new oil is added. (im talking air cooled engines here).

For wash jobs that I do locally I always carry an extra qt with me. When I am traveling out of the state or down in S. Cali...I keep 2 qts. plus pump oil with me as spares.

If I break down along the way somewhere....I just call Mark M and he points me in the right direction.

Good Thread.
Just took down both of my rigs for a full spring cleaning, even wire brushed the inside of the coil on my old heater. As for oil... this winter was so nuts with ice dams I was changing twice a week.
