Hello!

I live in Chatanooga TN,and was wondering about the prices in this area.
I bid on this job and customer acted like i just charged an arm and leg,i am not sure if i will get this job.I just would like to hear what rest of you would have charged.
Deck was 360 sq ft ,groung level, includes rails.Just grey ,no stain.I bid 100 to clean,100 to stain +5 gal of ready seal.
Fence is 2800 sq ft,6 month old wood, still looked pretty light.Just needs basic clean and brighthening.I bid 250 to clean and $250 to seal+15 gal of ready seal.
Basicly for the whole job it was $400 to clean and $400 to stain+ $436 worth of ready seal.Total $1236.
On top of that i gave this women %10 discount ,Grand Total $1113.
I think that is dirt cheap!!!!!!Only reason i did this because this was the neibhourhood of grey fences, lots of them.Every neibhour has a large fence and a deck, they all need cleaning.
I really dont think this was a high price, what would you normally charge???

Thanks a lot,
David Huff

Dude, that is beyond dirt cheap. If you can't sell 'em on cleaning and sealing a deck of that size for $200, then walk away. Best of luck.

Don't walk away, run.

Be careful about taking that big of a loss just to get into a neighborhood................so, what happens when the neighbor wants his done...........you can't all of a sudden double your prices...........

Some people have no idea how much money work should actually cost..........and others will just give you a hard time to shake you down.

Good luck!

Dave,

DIRT CHEAP, if they don't take it, then it's their loss. That price is good anywhere though it is low. Encourage them to get other bids and time will tell.

I'd watch out charging a low price to get into the neighborhood. Neighbors talk to each other. I literally had neighbors talking to each other as I was doing takeoffs for estimates on three homes next to each other. Everyone on the block was going to know what I charged the other! I an fact mailed out the estimates, but they still learned from each other.

David,
I would have charged $396 for the deck and $1400 for the fence. A total of $1796. That still might be cheep for some. I dont know. Hope this helps you. God Bless!!!

I would bid the deck at 522.00. Can't make a bid on the fence without knowing if it is a shadow box or straight picket. If it's a shadow box, I hate those and expensive, around 6.00 a linear foot. If straight picket 3.00 a linear foot.

My 2 cents worth.

Thanks alot guys guys,i will know what to charge next time.

Don Yates,$1940,good bid,i just wonder what would have happened if i bid that, her eyes would have popped out.Are people really willing to pay that much in your area ,considering they have to redo in 2-3 years, thats what most costumers dont like about paying such a price.
Good luck to all

Keep in mind, a fence will last longer then a deck.

Also, everyone's market is different..........you might not be able to get the kind of money that some of us do.............you'll have to experiment............but, don't base your decisions on these people (your customer).........they seem clueless!
