Do any of you offer mobile lube to the truck industry,,,,,I have had several wanting me to offer this and was wondering about some of the in's and out's.

Hey Bigboy,
I thought about this but I guess I dragged my feet too long because a guy opened up a quick lube here in our town just for trucks and I didn't want to compete with him so I just canned the idea.
I always thought it would work because in my company, we have to take the trucks to the shop and either wait on them or have someone pick us up and then go back later to get the truck. It would be a whole lot better to just have someone come to the location and do it.
Also I wondered about having to keep all those different brands of oil...do you tell them this is what you get or do you buy 5 or 6 different drums and keep on hand, and then filters, I think every truck on the road today has a different type of filter.
It sounds good on paper I just never got into the actual figures.

I have thought about this, but never pursued it. There are a few things to consider. First there are three basic engines in the over the road tractors. Big Cats, n-14 Cummins, and Detroit 60's. So there are only about twelve filters that you need to stock. Oil, fuel, water, air, and interior air. There also some add on services that you can market when you get an employee to do this. That would be mechanic work. Usually there are only a couple types of oil that the big trucks use, Rotella and Delo, and Ryder leasing usees Texaco Ursa. If you are doing the same accounts all of the time and you are the only one that they are using you can get them to use the type of oil that you are supplying.
As for Lube and oil changes on big trucks, they are pretty straight forward. They do often prefer Wix brand filters. This company also makes Napa and Carquest filters. You also need to make sure that any filter that you take off of a big truck is precharged before you reinstall it. This is especially important with the fuel filters. It is an ugly thing if there is air in the fuel lines of a semi.
Another thing that they might request is oil analysis. This will help them to determine the wear patterns on their engines. From an analysis they can tell if the bearings are wearing excessively, or the fuel is not igniting properly and if the truck is idling too much. Most of the newer breed of truck drivers do not understand the importance of this. They will though, and fleets are firm believers in this service.
They also might want you to adjust their brakes and do really light maintenance. I would get a release of liability before I did any kind of safety equipment work.
There are a ton of other adds that can be done, but this is enough to muddy the waters for you.

Man it cost more for the eqt. if you buy speed then it does to get into the powerwsh business.I checked on afew things last night on the net and found some high dollar stuff that you would need for speed and cleanliness.
As Scott said the add on's is a long list you could add to the service,blakefluid,wiperfluid,wiperblades ect.
For the big rigs the supplies would not be that hard to stock you could buy all the oils,grease in drums and the filters by qty.I know I would have to check out the prices on lube jobs and all that stuff.They tell me they pay 125.00 and more out on the raod to get it done,,wonder if a fellow could service one of those sucker in a hour.I guess for speed you would need a book telling where all the grease fitting where as not to miss any ...anyway thanks.

Clent,if someone is done doing it and your not going to why not see if your company will use the other guy to do your lube.You may end;up with a good friend that will send business your way,,he'll know alot of different trucks you may be able to wash.

A truck can easily be serviced in an hour. You have to move and not talk to everyone that comes along, but it can easily be done. Even for someone as old as you and Jon. Young trim guys like Ron and myself would probably take about 45 minutes. The longest thing would be the draining of the oil.
The first thing that you do is check the oil to make sure there is nothing funky going on.
Then go under the truck with your wrench, pan and grease gun.
Start the oil drain.
Grease the zerts. There are some on all of the U-Joints, and the tie rod ends. They should be pretty easy to get to.
Remove the filters that you can reach.
Recharge the filters on the top side. Fill with the various fluids that they filter.
Replace the filters.
Replace the oil drain plug.
Start filling the oil.
Check belts and hoses and wiring for anything that might be strange.
Check the radiator water level.
Finish up the oil.
Go have a soda.

It is really a pretty easy routine.

Scott,
I think you're under cover and you really work for the shop that services our trucks because that sounds like the way they do it...and miss half of the grease zerks and never check the water in the battery and the week after the service, a hose gets pregnant and bursts or a U-joint comes out and it take them about two hours.

Actually when I used to drive for a small company, they did not have enough driving work for me, so I serviced my own truck. Learned a little bit about it in the short time I was doing it. I also was careful because I knew who's tail would be on the side of the road if it broke down. In Arizona if it breaks in the summer, you are screwed.

I know they are alot of those zerks on a big rig cuz I keep the motor and frame clean on alot of the ones I do.

Hey I wasn't talking about a pan or grease gun,,I'm talking speed,,everything air and vacum even then appling the oil its pumped out of a tank in the servic truck plus you can set it to pump just how many qts you want,The old oil is also pumped(vacum)into another tank right out of the truck,,,,'Cleanliness'.

I figured on an hour to do but you would have to be all eblows and O's to do it in that time peroid if you checked everything plus not miss no zerks.

Like Clent said,,they miss alot of zerks plus if it doesn't take no grease they or most do not change out the zerk they just squirt grease around it so it looks like they greased it....Clent how many zerks on a rig 35,45 maybe 50.

If I do it I want all the fancy stuff to do it with as in speed.Don't want no wrench or pan if I can keep from it.They have a small pump you can pull diesel out of their tank to recharge the filters 'cleanliness'.I see several useing a small hand pump to do this and most of the time they spill fuel on the tanks.

The only problem I would have is trying to find someone to run it for me or give up powerwashing.
