Offering PC help to all

#1
Hey since I'm new to this board, I thought I would offer my services up. If anyone needs any help with PC stuff (especially in the internet connectivity or database area) drop me a line and I'd me more than happy to help. I'm new to power washing, so I will be seeking a lot of help here, and I just want to do my part to give back!!

Hey Dan.. There are two main causes of pop-ups. There are pop-ups tossed at you from the website you are at, and then there are random ones caused by spyware or adware. The good news is there are free remedies for both!

For the ones caused by the website you're at, a popular program is the Google toolbar. The toolbar is free from google and has a good pop-up blocker, and auto-fill option, and a search engine built in. Beware of "free" toolbars that promise to rid you of pop-ups. Some are less reputable and will do more damage. The Google bar is great and I use it myself. you can get it at: http://www.google.com/downloads

For the pop-ups that appear due to spyware or adware, there are two programs that are free and relaible. BEWARE of any others that claim to be free and do the same thing!! There will do a lot of damage and can actually force you to reformat your PC. The two that are widely used and respected are "Spybot Search and Destroy" and "Ad-aware". They can both be downloaded free at www.download.com. I highly recommend downloading both of these and running them both. Both of these will find stuff that the other missed.

Good luck Dan!! Let me know if you have any other questions!!

Our Systems Administrator here at Cleaner Times told me to download all three that Kevin mentioned on my PC at home and they seemed to do the trick. A counter on the google tool bar keeps a running total of the pop-ups blocked. It might surprise you how fast the total goes up.

Kevin, what is your opinion of IrfanView (a free download)? As a "computer ignorant" I find it very easy to use when I just need to make a digital photo smaller before I email it to someone. If IrfanView does anything else, I haven't figured out what it is.

I take all of my digital photos at a high resolution since you can come down, but can't go up in size. One of the biggest challenges we have here at the magazine is getting digital photos that are big enough work. Photos on the web are 72 dpi and we need 300 dpi photos for print.

Kevin, Thanks for offering us your expertise.

Hey Chuck,

Sorry it took me a bit to respond. As far as IrfanView goes, I have never heard of it, ut I don't really do a ton with photo editing. I know there are a ot of free applications out there for file editing and conversion though, and I really have not heard of any that were particularly harmful. Usually you'll see spyware and adware coming with Internet-related free applications, such as fake spyware removal tools, fake spam removal tools, or even those popular but resource hogging programs like WeatherBug and Gator.

And, hey, if you're not having any problems, then I wouldn't do anything. If the programs I suggested in the earlier post don't take issue with IrfanView, then I would assume it's ok.

Dan S: Did you try the earlier suggestions yet, and are you still having problems?

Cheers,

-Kevin

Do what I did-go to pandasoftware.com and take the year service and have them use off site sftware and hardware to solve the problem. I have no problems with my Dell and Panda Software. The service is $85 per year.

lpwhandyman, I got one for ya. I use IE. I have several email accounts. How do I get IE to synchronize more than one account from a vender. Example: I have an account with my internet provider and a account with MSN( hotmail). When I try to add a second hotmail account to IE it adds as HOTMAIL(1) but neve merges, just hangs up at the read mail screen. What do I do to get more than one account from one vender to work?
