Hey James that's cool!! Vf101 used to be the Jolly rogers when they were an f-14 squadron. (skull and crossbones logo) In fact they were VF-33's sister squadron on the USS America. That's the squadron I was in as an AO. I was on the America back when the pump room blew up on our cruise..lol Man it's amazing how the past comes back to haunt you..

If there's anything I can do to help you out just let me know!

Sounds good henry, thanks for the help. VF-101 is the grim reapers though, they are the training sqaudron here at oceana. They will be shut down though by the end of this year. Its all going to the super hornet now, I am working on F-18F Superhornet now, at least until Jun 2006 and I retire. Just busting my butt working on weekends and during the week when I can trying to build my business for when I retire. Take care and nice talking.

Bleach is good sometimes

We use bleach sometimes in wood restoration to kill mold and mildew but that is all. I leaves the wood with this bleached out look, not as vibrant. Bleach also doesn't clean up dirt it just kills stuff so we mix it with soap to kill two birds with one stone. The acid is our main resource when restoring a weather beaten deck.

Do you pretreat at low pressure with the bleach/cleaning solutions or are you putting on at pressure and blasting at the same time?

Wood work doesn't require any "high" pressure. Even for the toughest paint removal, you should never use more than 1000 psi and always keep the wand 8-10 inches from the surface! Too much pressure or too close with the wand will damage the wood fibers irreparably.

Bad choice of words. I know you don't use high pressure on wood. I was just asking if you pretreat, let the chemical sit for a few minutes, then rinse off. Also, is there someone out there that I could shadow for a day to see how things are done. Especially cleaning and treating a deck. I've never cleaned a deck this way. [hump]

I figured as much :) Deck 1-2-3 nutshell version: Wet deck, apply chems, let dwell, rinse. Apply brightner, rinse, rinse, rinse. Let dry 2ish days, detail, apply stain, collect check :)

PS, I think NC may be a little far for you to travel to hang out with us - what area of TX are you in?

Dallas/Ft Worth area. I work for the airlines (guess which one) so i can fly for free, even in the cockpit if I want to. We fly into Raleigh, Greensborough, Charlotte....so it's no biggy. I've already told my wife, and business partner, that I need to go around and see a couple of things done first hand. I want to spend a little time with someone who could never be any direct competition so they would feel ok about passing on tips and tricks.

And , of course, the beer is on me :D

My sinuses are a mess,my pants all have holes in them, all thanks to the bleach. I now use a product (very simular to the price of bleach)that you have to mix on the job site, because it evaporates in 2-3hours. This stuff is amazing to say the least. Spray it on wait 20-30min. wash off with low press. your done. With bleach you have to get to close to the wood ,which will splinter it .You can actually smell this stuff working.(smells just like mold)If the deck has really been abused it may take two coats, but who cares while you are waiting the20-30min. you are talking to the customer about cleaning thier sidewalks, patios, holm, etc. This product also works very well on roofs. My favorite part it is not harmful to anything. This includes plants, yard, sinuses, pants, vynil, paint, etc.I have to agree bleach is to harmful!!!!
what chemical do you use

Bleach

I agree that the companies that make the products to clean decks are probably blowing the bleach thing out of proportion. I don't use it since it kills plants and grass and I hate to smell it, among other reasons.

I'm sure he is talking about sodium percarbonate which is a much better cleaner than bleach but that's my measly opinion. [lm]

When I have used bleach it was called "Clorox Outdoors". It was formulated differant than just bleach. It was safer to use around vegatation.

If you're referring to the existing Outdoor Bleach by Clorox, it is further from safe than the straight up laundry kind! Outdoor contains sodium hydroxide, another plant killer if you don't keep things rinsed properly.

Clorox Outdoor contains 0.5% of sodium hydroxide and 5-8% of sodium hypoclorite. Regular Clorox bleach contains less then 0.2% of sodium hydroxide and 6-7.35% of sodium hypoclorite. It's amazing that little change warrants a complete name change...
