Question on the pop-off-valve or pressure relief valve.

Should this be replaced if it goes off or is it normal for this to release when running unit. Last week while doing a job I noticed it going off. Scared the @#%*& out of me, until I relized what it was.

.

I don't think you need to replace unless its not holding the psi you want or leaking. If you replace get one with a hose barb and plumb it to the float tank, supply tank or inlet side of pump,,its safer,,hotwater spray,,things get wet and it want scare the @#96* out of you,its quiter

.If it keeps doing it check your unloader.I run a open gun and the first time I heared it I though I'd screwed things up for sure.

When those things pop off it is scarry. There is a spring inside of it after time it will get weak and it will pop off. If it is leaking you will need to replace it. there is also an adjustment on most just adjust it if it keeps on. The fact it is popping might mean your unloader is spiking too high.IT MAY BE CRANKED UP TOO MUCH ,you may need a bigger tip or an adjustment on your unloader.

What is a pop off valve? Protects the pump from head pressure and heat.

my pops off go off too when my UN-loaders are adjusted wrong or bad.

2 Questions Rick, has it happened since? Where you hooked up to cold water?

I have hooked up to hot water at restaurants so many times by accident I cant count them. This will also make the valve work. Heat plays with that spring wiz was telling us about. heat and metal next thing you know the pop off goes crazy. Water out of those kitchens can be very hot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

has it happen since that last job? could you have been hooked up to hot water?

There are two styles of pop-off valves.
#1 Is a pressure relief valve It is used as a safety device incase your unloader fails. It will relieve excess pressure from the pump. It stops your pump and hoses from blowing up from too much pressure.

#2 Is actually called a Thermal relief valve. It will open up when the temperature is too high around 140 deg . It usually goes on the low pressure or inlet side of your pump. It is also called a Pump Saver. When your water circulates inside of your pump it gets hot when you don't pull the trigger it keeps going in a circle and pretty soon it goes above 140deg and this lets out the hot water and cold can cool down your pump.

Wiz,

I think my problem is #2. Yesterday I did a small job cleaning the inside of an trailer and it went off again. But not until I put the burner on. I also noticed that my hw seems to be coming out at a very high temp. than norm. Since I have no way of adjusting the temperature....What do I do?

If you have scale build up it will make your volume go down and your heat go up. A temporary fix or bandaide is to adjust your fuel pressure on the fuel pump. it is a slotted screw on the right side of the fuel pump cw to increase, ccw to decrease. You can also install a smaller fuel nozzle inside of the burner where the electrodes are.
