Quickbooks problem on computer... HELP!

Here's my frustrating dilemma:

Whenever I go to click on my Quickbooks program shortcut, it now brings up an error saying that my program is no longer available on the c drive, and is not relocatable. But, when I re-install the disk on my c drive (just going through the installation process with the disk), it sometimes will come back up after several tries. I have my information saved on two back-up disks, so I'm ok there, but I have no idea what the problem is. We have many other programs on the computer that work fine, including Quicken, and this is the only program that does this. Help! I was going to upgrade to Quickbooks Pro 2002, should I do it now and will that erase my problems? Will my files transfer over easily from regular Quickbooks to Pro? Any onfo would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Chris

P.S. I am very close to being computer illiterate, so forgive me.

Hmmm....
I'll defer to Tony. I'll see if I can get him for you. Could be the shortcut does not have the correct path to the application, but I want his opinion. I don't think it is that easy.

Please share with us which version of the Quickbooks you are using, and also which version of Windows. It will help us help you.

Hi Beth,

I am running Quickbooks 2000 Basic version, and Windows 98.
I wanted to update to Quickbooks Pro 2002, would that solve my problem?

Thanks in advance for your help!

In explorer, drill down to the directory that holds your quickbooks, sometimes defaulted into the program files directory. Find the execute file and double click. If it works the batch file (in DOSese) has been corrupted, but should be easy to fix. If you can;t open quickbooks, then you have probably lost some files of some sort. Best bet would be to UNINSTALL quickbooks, then reintstall - good job making the backup file.

There are very active support forums at www.quickbooks.com where you would get an answer fast on this.

As long as you have your file backed up, go ahead and uninstall/reinstall it.

I would imagine that if everything else on the pc is working fine, if you reinstall it should be ok.........or, the new version.

Chris, go to Costco to buy it..........i got it $40 cheaper there then anywhere else. (2002 Pro). Of course, membership is $40, but its a good place to buy alot of things.......

Thanks Bill, I'll try that for the short term, and thanks also Mike for the costco advice. I'll probably pick that up this weekend, my wife has a Costco card already.

I appreciate the help.

Another thought. Go to the microsoft site and download any updates for your particular OS. Sometimes you can find a file to download that takes care of windows / application software bugs. This is particularly true with ME and XP.
