Reason for Surge?

This doesn't seem any big deal, when my gun is off, the p/w surges periodically, seemingly at random. Also, water continues to flow out of the nozzle as well (small amount, no pressure). Hose is fine, w/no air leaks to be found anywhere. Pressure is right on, and all operational aspects are great - I just know that this isn't quite right, and it bugs the crap outta' me.
I know it's simple, please go easy on me:eek:

Does it only happen when you are running at a very high pressure? Or even when the pressure is low?

What brand of washer is it?

If you have ANY LEAKS in the system the unloader valve will cycle when gun is in off position.

:) Call me if you need advice.

Now that I think about it, only @ higher pressure does it surge, and yes, I do use a quick-coupler. I figure that a leak of some sort, somewhere, is the culprit - and from the leaking, the gun is my prime suspect?
I've got more guns, but hate to toss anything fixable or salvagable for parts. What's a gun rebuild entail?

Bucket,

Are you telling us that the unloader cycles / surges when you are spraying?

Yet ANOTHER aspect - the trigger has been sticking as well, to the point of being able to work for 5-10 min. or so w/out applying any pressure at all on the trigger.
Thanks!

Sunny,

Time for a new trigger gun, then call me I will walk you through some tests.

Check for obstructions in your nozzle. Need more data / info on your machine to diagnose.

Vanguard 16 horse twin (briggs&stratton). Pretty basic - source hose from H2O tank, pressure hose w/2 step lines. Actually, the unloader cycles always ... low pressure or high. Tonight I noticed some older splices in the pressure hose that are suspect. I'm sure the gun is my problem though.
Let me know any more info. necessary for diagnosis, and thank you for your time.

-1- Leaky gun: Repair or replace.

-2- Obstructions in nozzle? Undersized nozzle?
If so replace nozzle.

-3- Repair any leaks you can find.

-4- Unloader? Maybe it is the culprit what model unloader is it?

Do you have a spare unloader?

Mark -

Thanks for the help! I tried one of my other guns, and it worked great. After taking the old gun apart, I see why/how it's often easier to simply buy a new one ... since a repair kit is about %75 of the cost of a new one, and you still don't know how long it will last. It's amazing how used to the old gun I became, since it's drop in performance happened gradually, I didn't overtly notice until it was almost unusable.

Any suggestions for a small-scale water-recovery setup? I'm looking for a used vacu-boom, or an alternative that is about the same in cost.

Thanks again!!

ah, very intresting. I was trying to figure out why my machine was doing the same thing. But it is only when it is running and i am not spraying. The pressure gauge will sit at zero, and jump up to about 1200 to 1400 then right back to zero. To describe, kinda like i was squeezing the trigger very quickly. I guess it is the gun then?
