Roof cleaning

Hey all, a question for those of you that use a TSP and bleach mix for roof cleaning.
How many gallons of solution do you use for lets say a 1000 square foot roof?
I saw a company stating that they use 200 to 300 gallons of solution for roof cleaning.
That seems high to me. I am trying to figure out how big of a tank I need for mix.

I think most people respond better to someone with a name and a location.

I would use 8 to 10 gallons on 1000 sq ft of roof, or approx. 100 to 125 sq ft per gallon. This will vary with how bad the roof is and also the outside temperature. Let it get above 60 deg F. Sun is good and low wind is better. Good Luck.

Have a good day... whoever you are and ... wherever you are.

Hey thanks for the response. My name is Andrew Lemick and I live in Columbus, Ohio. As you can tell I am just getting started in the biz.

I wonder why that company say they use 200 to 300 gallons of mix on a single roof. Does not make sense to me.

Again thanks for your reponses.

Badger.

I looked at that site you posted. There statment of 200-300 gal of there "special solution" is 3%-6% sodium hypochlrite. (diluted liquid pool chlorine. Roofing manufacture assoc reccomends using 3%-6% solution let it dwell for about 15 minutes and rinse. Some people will not rinse but I feal its needed.

When I do roofs I use a 60-40 ratio. 60% water and 40% chlorine. This will give you the 3%-6% mix. I let it sit and rinse. a typlical 2000 sq ft house I will use between 20-30 gals of chlorine. I always wet down the surrounding lanscape before and after I am done doing the roof. With my 60/40 mix is about 80 gals. and then the rinsing could be aroung 100 gallons of water. Hence the 200-300 gals of the "special solution".

Using a battery operated pump like a shurflo is fine for applying the chems to the roof. Its just not as fast as using a gas powered pump.

The shurflo I use is a 3gal per minute pump and works ok.

I am switching to a hypro roller pump for this season. Its a low pressure pump that will flow about 20 gal per minute and runs off a 5 hp motor. As you can see this new pump for me should make my time doing roofs alot quicker than before.

We are setting up a roller pump driven by a 5.5 HP Honda for chemical pre-spraying for one of our customers next week.

Hello my name is nick.By reading about these roof cleaning questions I came up wth one of my own.IM in search of a mold and mildew cleaner that will remove all alegea from asphalt shingles without using pressure.Lots of people dont want pressure or chlorine on there roofs.I also notice guys are advertising chemical wash no pressure. Now I know I can use my soap injector nozzle for the high volume rinse, but its the chemical im having a problem locating.I did get something from a place calledshingle care, but it didnt do the job they claimed it would. Mabe you can advise me of a chemical and were to purchase it. I thankyou for any help you ca give me.

There are some sodium hydroxide cleaner on the market, but the above is what is approved by ARMA so I'll stick with it until they say different.

The 3-6% solution that Scott mentioned is Sodium Hypochlorite (pool chlorine) it works better, is cheaper, and gives better results than any other so called roof cleaner. Just make sure you learn how to use it safely, as with any other chemical.

Magic Chemical?

I HAVE SPENT HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS ON POWDERS, SLURRIES, AND LIQUID ROOF CLEANING PRODUCTS. NOTHING IN MY OPINION WORKS AS GOOD AS BLEACH & SOAP.

response to my question

First i would like to thank you for you response.I do not understand why people would say chemical cleaning with no pressure. Now I did use strait chlorine before, but I sprayed it with a hudson sprayer and did rinse but at times I dont really think that does such a good job neither.Mabe I need more volume of chlorine then a hudson sprayer can put out. What would you recommend. There is a product I picked up called red stuff and someone told me to mix this 15 to 1.15 gallon of chlorine to one gallon of product. Now if this would work it would be great, but what do you say to a custermer when they want no pressure. They are skeptical of granules coming off.

NICKD, I USE A "SOFTWASHING" SET-UP. THERE IS NO PRESSURE TO DO ANY DAMAGE. THIS TO ME IS MUCH SAFER AND MUCH FASTER THAN OTHER METHODS. THIS IS SOMETHING THAT WORKS FOR ME. I STARTED OUT WITH SHURFLO PUMPS YEARS AGO AND I ALWAYS WANTED MORE FLOW AND PRESSURE, NOW I GOT IT AND ROOF CLEANING IS A BREEZE.

CHECK OUT THE PROCESS. http://www.softwashing.com/services.asp
