Rust

Hey,

Who is using what on rust. I think we all know about Iron out and Clr. But those products come in small packages and work on spot cleaning.

Let's list some other types of chemicals we have used to remove larger effected areas with rust stains.

I really have not ran into many of these jobs, and I have avoided a few. A couple of years ago I ran an estimate on a little mall.

It was for flat work. In the back there was a very large area, maybe 30x100 covered with rust. It was coming from a leaking pipe.

I estimated that job, and it was an estimate that I did not get. At the time in a way I was sort of happy. I was not sure what I would do about the rusty area if I did get it.

If you got that job what would you have done to remove the rust? Get this I went back there a few weeks later and it was clean as a babies bottom!!!!!! I'm thinking some form of acid.

Thanks,

What form are you using it in?

We get it in the granular form. I have tried it from time to time on small stuff.
it didn't seem to work.

How are you mixing it?

Are you adding a surfactant to activate it?

Thanks

Their are alot of different type of rust removers availible at places like home depot and plumbing supply stores the problem i have found is they are expensive when you start doing large areas. envior spec has a product called rust-a-way. it is pretty much the same a the other removers but it comes in 30lb kit and will make 50-60 rtu gallons for about 45 bucks. and applied through a low gpm/pressure applicator you can cover alot of sq ft per gallon. they get my thumbs up on price and quanity.

I have used Aluminum Brightener(hydroflouric acid) to remove rust stains off of vinyl siding before. Sprayed it on (some light brushing, but only on heaviest) and power washed it away. I tried everything else I could think of first and nothing else even left a dent in it. Even tried CLR on a small spot, but no luck. The Aluminum Brightener worked great.
