Yellow Pages and word of mouth.

I don't do those direct mailer packs, because I do not give discounts/coupons........not a big believer in them. I get enough work without having to lower my prices.

I blanket the two towns where I do the most business with flyers and the rest comes from referrals and the phone book.

I use many methods with the best results coming from the newspaper. We also hand out flyers in the neighborhood we are currently working in, display yard signs, repeat business, referals, yellow pages, moving buill board (trailer) and home shows.

Ron,

When I first got into this business around ten years ago and had little money. I would print out flyers and go around passing them out to the homes in my area. I remember it well... it helped me keep in shape...all that walking. I have used the direct mail coupons, and had some good responses from them but, found that like Mike said, people would expect a discount. Not much of a believer in that either. We do quality work and expect to be paid for it...at the price we quote.

Now we only advertise in the yellow pages. You do get people looking for the cheapest price but you learn somewhat, how to weed them out. We also get lot's of referrals from satisfied customers.

Right now we are doing some "surgical" marketing: we drive
through neighborhoods and write down addresses of those
with decks, fences, etc. and mail them a 4"x6" index card
(offering no coupon, discount)..just started doing this so
I'll keep you posted on the returns (if any). With gas prices
on their way up and no time...this technique may not last
long! Good luck and let me know what works for you.

Well after all these years I found out you cant cold call houses with out permits. Pretty stiff fines and jail time in one of our cities. Scottsdale Arizona takes you straight to jail soliciting without a permit. as one of my employees found out a few weeks ago.

we are going to try val-Pak and a couple of our own direct mailers. I will let you guys know how it goes.

We're trying Val-Pak this year also, along with the services directory in a local paper. This is in addition to the yellow pages, Clipper Magazine, and Merchandiser Newspaper. We also send out post cards to customers on the 2 year mark, and distribute flyers on streets where were are working.

What a bummer Ron,

If I were you I would just take over the city, become mayor, councilman and police chief.

The run all those old golfers out of town, take back the city..

Hey, wait, be nice, I grew up in Scottsdale. This must be something new. I know my parents still live there and get hit all of the time. Of course, they probably don't live in the type of area that your guy was cold calling. I do have a question, Ron, Is it possible to get a permit to sel in the town? I am sure that a lot of the hassle has to do with the gypsies that travel around and do shoddy work or no work and run off with the deposit. Mybe there is a way around the no soliciting rule.

Scott, I didn’t know about this law and have been soliciting in all towns illegally for years. Yes even mesa has a law and you need a permit. As you know mesa not as strict in areas as Scottsdale would be.

In Scottsdale you need 15 day advanced notice. 10.00 per person per day. 25.00 records check per person.

Whether you need them or not. The law requires in Scottsdale a tax privilege license and use of tax licensed permit.

In mesa you would probably never have a problem. Keep in mind they also have something on the books. they also don’t allow you to park your car on the driveway but we know they don’t enforce that.

Ron,

You're saying that Scott cannot legally park his car or truck in his own driveway? What good is the driveway for then if you own more cars then will fit in the garage?

What is this world coming to when a homeowner cannot even park in front of his house.

Ok so where I live we cannot park in the street between 1 AM and 6 AM. We cannot even have colored window coverings.

But I put them up in one room as a tempting thing and so far they have either never noticed or are not willing to test me on removing them.

Jon, keep in mind that this is a city ordinance. They don’t enforce it and probably never will. You can park your car in the street all you want. As a matter of fact Scott or I can park our rigs right in front of the house. I don’t live in and association and never will. I don’t believe Scott has one, however he lives in a very upscale area and people would probably give him trouble if he parked out front.

I have a shop in phoenix and keep most my trucks in the shop. I have five trailer units that I keep at my house. Scott has seen them and he probably doesn’t want to be my neighbor. I now have a commercial zoning and my neighbors cant do a whole lot. I will build a garage one of these days very soon.

No Parking in Driveway???

I had better be able to park in my driveway, my truck won't fit in the garage. It is too long. As for the upscale neighborhood, I am just a dumb truckwasher. It is not really that upscale. Now a few blocks east is really upscale. Minimum price of entry, $350,000. The two most expensive houses are $5 milliion and $2.9 million. Gee, I would buy the less expensive house of the two, but, I don't need 16,000 feet livable, and a 16 car garage, with an additional motor home garage. I guess that I could store more equipment at the house though.

Scottsdale is really picky on some stuff, and are willing to do what it takes to keep the upscale atmosphere. I grew up the poorest kid on the block in South Scottsdale. (An area of what are now $140,000 homes) But I know how they can be, and that is typical. They can't outlaw it outright, but, they can make it so expensive and inconvenient that it is not worth the effort.

Now Ron, if it was me and I was a real, mmm, prick, I would buy the license/permit and go door to door. Five guys that work the last possible 15 minutes of the day and the first 15 permitted minutesd of the day. I would hit the Mayors house and all of the city councilmen's houses every day for about a month. Morning and night. The guy's would porbably end up in Jail. but you have to admit it would be fun to harass the uppity yahoo's
