Tip of the Day (well maybe not everyday)
Let's try and see if others will offer their tips as well

One of the things you don't see many people talk about are things you can do before turning on pressure washer ....

the tip is ...have a leaf blower and broom, shovel and trash can on your truck/trailer for me the job goes a lot faster.. first blowing all the dirt (if you have lots of dirt/debris broom and shovel first and then use the blower) than powerwash....

the logic is the same as sweeping kitchen floor first................. then you mop

using the blower first mean you don't get a lot of mud blowing on the walls/windows of the building youre working around

hope this helps someone

Before the pressure washer gets started....

We do a quick walk around homes to check for windows/doors left open. Look for prior damage and document./notify homeowner. Also, pass out door hangers to surrounding homes.

It cost's nothing

get a website (if you dont already have one)
How many times have you asked a company (whats your webisite) if they say yes
you go to their website and look and if they say no ...you think wow.... how come?

example ; I 'm looking to buy a reclaim system (and use the gray water for cleaning as well)

I went to two places this week ...the first one is Robert Hinderliter in fort worth (talked to
mr Hinderliter about 15 minutes answered all my question)

the system is costing about 5500 dollars after talking about system... I went back to office
and went on his website (forgot to ask a couple of question web-site helped)

2nd place ramteq (houston same/similiar price) nice.. answered my questions gave me a contact sheet and guess what ? no website (I asked.... they are thinking about one)
I was disapointed no catalog on chemical priciing) went back to office looked at spec sheet..

so the tip of the day would be get a website people will remember you ...
and it cost nothing (5 bucks a month or less) and you dont have to know anything about computers.....
they all have free software ....(assuming you are able to read this post (you had to turn your computer on didnt you) it is so simple to start ...
dont let it stand in your way........for success

Here's a tip for you:

Before heading out for a day of washing, Do a quick oil check, start up your machine and make sure everythings in order. Winter temps can kill a weak battery!

Picture 's

In order to get work it is helpful to have a website(previously stated)

now what to put on it... number one thing is pictures (really really important)

what kind you ask? pictures of your work before and after and maybe your equipment

simple enough ...but how do you get them is the question..

If your starting out or have been doing it for a while (were lazy and did'nt take pictures)
Places to get pictures;

1. you could ask other pressure washer to borrow pictures to get started...
2. you can clean your own /friend /realitive's driveway and sidewalks (shooting before and after's}
3. you could offer to to do your church property different sections before/after
4. you can do sidewalk demo in front of convience store's before and after
5.If you haul your own water you can go anywhere on a weekend /holiday find a old highway... clean a section of concrete maybe a concrete wall or a bridge coloum

6.Volunteer..... maybe...... Habitat for Humanity and take pictures!!!!!!!!!

7. there are tons of places to clean /shoot pictures go find your nearest steak and ale bennigans...or old run down strip malls ...
(now for the disclaimer..I'm not suggesting you trespass or vandalize people's property)

Imagine you find some place that's out of the way .....you take a broom out of your truck .......you start sweeping the sidewalk and using a dust pan

I don't think anyone is going to call the police or (the swat team) for sweeping sidewalks... likewise with your pressure washer trying to get before/after pictures .
If you are arrested i'll send some money to bond you out...(up to 25 dollars)

I'm suggesting there is tons of vacant/condemmed property you could go to ...start you rig up... do a couple areas ...shoot picture's ..... and get in and out 15-30 minutes (if that long....your not doing a photo shoot for sports illustrated)

the main point.... is in order to sell what you do ..you should have representation of your work
Instead of saying I .....(can) .....clean your sidewalk or driveway......
you can say look at this before/after pictures this what I do and ......... can do for you............................Sold

that would be my tip for today

I think cleaning someone's property without permission, whether vacant or not is a bad idea. Always get permission first from the owner or pm. It only takes a second and might save you a lot of grief.

5 easy pieces

tip of the Day:

If you don't have 200-800 for a mass flyers or mailers
This might work for you

Get 5 envelopes (Large manila 81/2 x11) ...Inside put a business card ....also but in a flyer selling /telling all about company/you and service you provide commerical/residential. Also put a picture of you rig cleaning a property (4x6 picuter color walmart 15 cents) and maybe a coupon if you want with a expiration (time limit for special to end).
Now put a stamp on it...and finally put it on the the Dashboard of your truck

That's it total cost about 5 dollars (dollar a piece)

if you want commerical work sometime in the next 1-4 days of driving you will see
someone/someplace (resturant /convience store/Gas station etc. to send it to (remember.. its all done all you have to do is put a address on it and drop it in the mail) pick wisely

If you want residential work sometime in the next 1-4 days of driving you will see
a house for sale that needs cleaning or maybe sidewalks or driveway

and wouldnt be more rewarding if your son/daughter wife/girlfriend put the those
5 pieces together and put them on your windshield and all you had to do is find 5 people to send it to and sit back and see the results....with the family
who knows ....it could be everytime you got in the truck ..... on the dasboard were 5 more

.

why bother (if you dont have to)

Reclaim the water ..Why bother ....well it could make you more money...Let's think about it.

Maybe their is no current enforcement in you area..but by offering this it makes you look more professional ..Makes you unique and it shifts the burden (not actually) on the customer. The example... you give a comerical estimate to clean a bank or fast food
Let's say your quote is 400-600 and the response is "you're nuts everyone else" is
200-300 dollars your price is way to high...I think if your unable to convince them of you're quality of service and experience..Then you can say the magic words;
I will be Happy to give you a lower price ..I will deduct the cost of reclaimming your water and properly disposing of it..
the only response at that time would be either...... okay ...or what do you mean you're not going to properly dispose the water? (by the way if they say okay and their is enforcement in you area you wouldnt want the job for the lower price move on ) the next customer who might pay or They might Say "Tell me why does it cost more and doesnt everybody ?

this whole post is about offering a unique service that brings you a premium price
on a service that not everyone can or is willing to provide

(okay now for the Disclaimers..I realizie their is strict enforcement in lots of states and it is the clean water act (federal law) everyone should be doing this anyway...However a lot of cities are less strict on what enforcement is or is'nt..

Also these posts are general they are not meant to be a personel letter to one specific person and it doesnt mean I'm so smart I preaching to everyone the right way..
It might help to think... I'm taking to a guy in montana who has been pressure washing
2 years has no business now ...and is thinking about selling is rig on craigslist I'm
just trying to give him a few options.....

and now the tip of the Day: These post are calld the tip Of the day...Not the argument of the Day:)

Hollywood want's you !!!

Hollywood want's you....maybe ,,,maybe not,, this post is about making a video
of your work...to get more business

1.you could make a video with a cheap camcorder/camera ....do it yourself
2.you could pay someone to video you (ton's of people on craigslist offering that service cheap
3.Have a proffesional video made... pay a company (real company) to make it.

Let's focus on number 2. nothing wrong with number 1. but if you don't have a camcorder it it gonna cost a lot of money for a nice one plus the learnig curve to use it and how to edit....... Nothing wrong with number 3. either but proffesinally done may be (more money than it worth to you if you're a 1 man company)

Number 2 it is ,,,,Okay ...Try contacting people on craigs list (you know wash your house roof and driveway 99 bucks)..
Here's what your looking for..... someone who Has a nice camcorder and software to do a good/proffesional job and tell them your filming a comerical or a industrial video
you are willing to pay for the material (the cd disc) lunch /diner about 20 bucks total.

What do they get out it ? why would anyone do this for free ? well first of all they have produced a commerical video they can show other's and if they are just starting out it gives them a opportunity to practice on you ...Its like your doing a free demo power washing to get someones business. It gives them a project start to finish to go into their portfolio..
Okay that's the pitch..also if no takers than ask your friends /ex girlfriend/boyfriend? ex-wives adult chidren someone has a camcorder...
Maybe a community college /high school film class (a class assignmet etc )

Okay if you decide to go number 1 and a camcorder ..one piece of advice "for the love of god..... do no not hold it in one hand while power washing" it will look all jiggely (motion sickness)

a future tip of the day is what to film and a later post will be "what to do with it..... after making the disc."

Now for the disclaimer....If you do this.... don't sign anything that says it's their property and no your not paying per piece you can make your own copies thank you.... and they get experience and possibly a future client (or at least you could reccomend them based on their work to other tradesman or proffesionals.......

Kaizen ** A lesson on efficiency..........

***Click Here** States seek efficiency via Japanese way

Maybe this is something we can / should all implement in our business?

Ask why: States seek efficiency via Japanese way
JULIE CARR SMYTH - 12/28/2008 6:47:35 PM

The time it takes to get a complaint decided at Ohio's Bureau of Workers' Compensation has plummeted from an average of 142 days to 34. Licensing a snowmobile in Iowa involves 90 percent fewer steps today than it did two years ago. A growing number of cash-strapped states are attacking bulky, frustrating and time-consuming bureaucracies with a Japanese weapon: the notion of kaizen, or continuous improvement.
"It has taken off like wildfire around the country," said Teresa Hay McMahon, performance results director in Iowa, where kaizen was first used in state government about five years ago.
Kaizen (pronounced ky-ZEHN) is a way of thinking that diagrams a job step by step, puts workers at the center, gives them a sense of the total process they're involved in, and then frees them to think of ways to best do their jobs.
"We're making the work visible by doing the mapping," said Walter Lowell, director of lean management at the Maine Department of Health and Human Services. "Everybody knows they play a role in it, but they don't know the whole thing.
To get at the root of a problem, kaizen encourages people to ask "why" five times.
"You start to hear things like 'Why are you doing that?'" Lowell said.
In five-day exercises, managers, workers, lawyers, regulators, technicians and end users of a single government process _ say, getting a coal mine permit _ are assembled in one room to get educated about the big picture of a process and discuss each little piece.
The targeted task is meticulously mapped, using colored sticky notes to identify junctures where paperwork must be filed, decisions made, sign-offs obtained. The results emerge as a complex network, stretching sometimes across an entire conference room wall.
Then the participants set to work to eliminate most of what's there.
Latasha Phillips, an account clerk with the Ohio Department of Administrative Services, was apprehensive heading into her first kaizen exercise in October. She wound up a true believer.
"For me, it was exciting," said the 12-year state employee. "A lot of times you think that you may not be a part of something, but this teaches you are a part of it _ and you get to put your piece into it, to fit your piece into the puzzle."
State environmental regulators around the nation, whose cumbersome processes have long been the targets of business developers, have taken particular interest in kaizen. By this year, 29 states environmental agencies had conducted a kaizen session or were planning one.
Steve Wall, quality services director at the Ohio Department of Administrative Services, said dedicating an uninterrupted week to streamlining the process is the key to success.
"You cannot filibuster, you cannot stall. You look at this thing and say 'OK, justify that,'" Wall said.
Mental light bulbs pop on. Epiphanies are experienced.
In Maine, it occurred to someone during a kaizen session that death certificates could be issued months faster if copies, instead of the originals, were sent to be copied to microfiche archives. That way, vital records employees, who can't release a death certificate without the original in hand, could speed up the process.
Processing Maine death certificates _ required to access bank accounts and distribute an estate _ went from 95 days on average to five.
"We got calls from people saying they want to die in Maine now because they can get the death records so quickly," said Maine's Lowell.
Critics say that the downfalls of a process can never be understood that quickly and not without well-mapped data showing where a system is failing. And many argue that kaizen treats the symptom and not the cause of bureaucratic build-up.
It is made clear at the outset of each kaizen exercise that no one will lose their job as a result of the efficiencies that result, although some state agencies have shrunk their staffs through attrition following kaizen improvements.
Instead, jobs mostly change, like those of Iowa's environmental engineers after the landfill permitting process was broken down. It now takes 30 days on average to renew a permit instead of 187 days, for example, allowing engineers more time to inspect sites for regulatory violations, McMahon said.
Kaizen has its roots in the flow production of the auto assembly line pioneered by Henry Ford in 1913. Toyota adapted Ford's model beginning in the 1940s to add the employee-centered notion of continuous improvement, according to a history of the movement by the Lean Enterprise Institute.
The Toyota Production System, or Toyota Way, shifted the focus of workers from specific jobs to their places in the big picture. Machines were retooled to have more than one function and employees were encouraged to continually rethink how their job could be done better.
Toyota became the largest automaker in the world last year, a success many attribute to its approach to management and production.
Lowell said kaizen might not have taken off so forcefully in the public sector if it weren't for the pressure of economic hard times.
"When times are good, you don't worry whether you produce a lot of non-value-added work, but when times are tough and resources get scarce, you want to make sure you're using resources wisely," he said.

Quiet on the Set ....Cut

Okay you got someone to hold the camera now What?
Things you should Film
1. your truck /trailer equipment and all of you equipment
2.movie/pictures of thing you clean... parking lots ,shopping centers, sidewalks etc.
3. before and after pictures priceless
4.also showing how you set up a job with traffic cones put on a yellow safety vest(99 cent)
anything subliminal that shows you a safe worker...
5. also consider buying a uniform For the video) blue pants, white short sleve shirt (30 bucks) boots or rubber boots ,,,
6. this is real important ...If your not pretty like me (just kidding) maybe consider
finding someone 30 clean cut no tat's in shape to put in the video
(think about this if your old like me (56) you got to wonder if the old man in video will have a heart attack or he's moving to slow) whereas video of someone younger will portray a little more zip)

be a little creative find something a little unusual . ....to clean maybe a merry-go -round
a football stadium ...grand stands at a drag strip (go cart track) ...or maybe a airplane or fighter jet (in the salvage yard)..maybe a ballon festival....Or the county rodeo or state fair .....something unique people will remember your company name .....

Okay now for the disclaimer.. I not trying to hurt anyone's feeling on 56 being old age
also I not saying this is the only way to do a video ...If you want to do this and be in it good for you...Just be safe use a stunt double for the really tough scenes (action shots holding wand /surface cleaner)

Now for the tip of the day ....the Video your making is to send to future clients
See if you can make it 2 minutes or less....its like a movie trailer 2 minutes on less period...and if you think I'm wrong ...go to Utube and watch 7 minutes of some guy pressure washing his roof (boring)

a future post is what to do with your video and how to make money with it....

pressure washing is unique

pressure washing is unique .....thinking of all the business's you could be in,...very few that you can actually see they might need your service...(with the obvious being lawn care and painting....)

not many trades have that advantage (electricians plumbers carpenters etc...)

Tip of the day
if you need business look around something needs cleansing.... business's ...homes commercial send them your card or brochure...you might be surprised
(what if nobody's ever contacted them and they are looking for service)

Also these posts are general they are not meant to be a personnel letter to one specific person and it doesn't mean I'm so smart I preaching to everyone the right way..

David,
You bring up some good points.I remember when I was running a wash crew
frequently getting building wash jobs, because I stopped and asked for it.
Many times the building owner thought re-painting was the only option, they
were happy to get a clean new image at a fraction of the re-paint cost.:)
