Today's project

Cedar deck, was faded to gray, one year old. Used a mild stripper followed by brightner on Monday. Sealed by hand with Ready Seal Natural Cedar today.

This job had almost every factor to make it difficult...........elevation, concrete at the bottom of the steps, brick pavers below the deck, and a dryvit (fake stucco) house.

The only thing we got sealer on was two or three drips on the light fixture below the deck and to the left of the sliding door. Oh well.

nice job MIKE. Do you use a ladder to strip or a flexi-wand?
Did you let the wood pulp fly and then clean up or cover the dry-vit? [plastic or shield]
How hard is it to get ready seal off dry-vit if you did get some on it , and what would you use to get it off?
Also did you do the underside? i would guess YES. Did you just use your spread sheet to get the total sq. ft.?
I have not done a deck where both sides have needed to be done, anything special?
What brush did you use to get between the boards? Did you cover the pavers?
Sorry for so meny questions, but it's how i learn.
When you brush on ready seal do you give it one coat or two?
Looks to be about a $1500 deck job? [no real stripping]

I used a four foot wand and washed from the ground.

Did you let the wood pulp fly and then clean up or cover the dry-vit? [plastic or shield] I let it fly and it washed right off the dryvit because it was sealed with something. It stuck to the windows pretty good though.

I would have to say it would be nearly impossible to get Ready Seal off of dryvit. I did not get any on the dryvit.

Also did you do the underside? I did not do the underside, and I probably wouldn't even if they asked. That would be a real pain.

Did you just use your spread sheet to get the total sq. ft.? Yes, I did.......or maybe did the calculations by hand, I dont remember.

I have not done a deck where both sides have needed to be done, anything special? I havent done that either.

What brush did you use to get between the boards? Did you cover the pavers? Yes, I covered the pavers really well.......mostly with cardboard, and some plastic. I also taped the edge where the deck met the pavers.

When you brush on ready seal do you give it one coat or two?

I brush one coat on verticles and two coats on horizontals. The second coat goes on really easily.

It was $1080, and I had no intentions of stripping at all, until I did a test patch with the percarbonate and found a layer of whatever on there............owner says nothing was ever put on it, so I'm thinking maybe it was still mill glaze?? Anyway, used HD-80 half strenghth and blew it right off.

Nice job Mike. Don't you hate it when there is concrete/pavers below a deck? I invested in some butyl backed drop cloths, rather pricey but work great, nothing penetrates the butyl, and put them down on the concrete.

Looks like you were nice to the homeowner (pricing), for all the special care that was needed I would have thought the price would have been a little higher.

Great job.

It really wasnt all that hard. I'll take pavers over having a bunch of bushes and small trees all over the place any day.

Mike,
Looks great. How long did it take you to stain that deck by hand?
This is where I would have a problem because I am so slow when doing a deck by hand that a deck like this one would take me 2 days to stain. This is the part of this business which I absolutely hate.
