varnish on windows!

Pepsieddie,

I've never bid on a job in NY, or even out of South Carolina for that matter. I'm glad you havn't seen fab. debris in your area yet. If your builders are buying from a glass manufactorer that is producing quality glass, then you shouldn't have a problem. But what happens when the builder decides to go with a different glass company, and defective tempered glass is installed? I'm not suggesting that you tell the builder that you're not liable for any scratches; just scratches that are due to fabricating debris on tempered glass, because those are out of your control and not your fault.

Have you visited the IWCA's website for this issue? You think that by educating your builders, you would lose jobs. I can put you in touch with several window cleaners that have experienced just the opposite. A builder will respect a contractor for knowing the field in which he works, knowing what get's good results, and what doesn't. Fab. debris and scrapers don't get good results. A builder also knows that you've got to protect your business just as much as he has to protect his. So once he understands fabricating debris, the waiver will be no problem. In fact, he'll want to get a waiver signed as well, between him and the glass manufactorer, saying that he'll receive only quality glass. If a builder is not interested in learning about what could affect his business, I won't work for him.

Fabricating Debris is not limited to only commercial glass. Any tempered window can be defective. Store fronts, malls, homes, are all suspects. Every window cleaner should be aware of this issue.

Contact me via email if you would like to speak with other WC'ers to see how they have benefited from educating the builders. I don't want to seem defensive, or disrespectful. I have just seen first hand what fabricating debris does. I learned about it just in time, but if I hadn't, it could have gotten real ugly for my business. I just want to help keep WC'ers out of that position.
