Windows XP Pro ?

Does anyone know if there is an upgrade package from Windows XP to XP Pro?

It seems there would be a lower cost upgrade , as opposed to the same as upgrading Windows 98 to XP Pro?

Is XP Pro a big plus as compared to XP?

XP has neat little stuff to make to regular user more fun, and to make things user friendly. XP Pro has less of that and more mobile business and networking stuff.

I have XP on my laptop and Pro in my office. I really don't see the difference other than XP looks a little better here and there.

The only major difference between the two is that XP Pro has more administrative tools and options. You may want these if your office is networked. I can ask a good friend of mine what the exact differences are, he's a network engineer and really knows his stuff.

Join the revolution and get Apple OS Jaguar on a PowerPC.

With a pretty face on top of FreeBSD and Unix it is stable, secure and has ~80,000 Unix programs available plus command line access to really make things jump.

AAAANNNDDD.... It has automatic recognition on WinTel networks, with M$ Office V.x it plays nice with all M$ applications. If you ask M$ they will tell you that Office V.x has more fetures, is better integrated and looks better than Office for WinTel. Won't even mention the seamless wireless networking ability built in...

There are literally 1000's of programs from Quickbooks to Web Authoring and the new Safari browser from Apple is Open Source just like the OS so there are more and more developers working on applications.

XP and XP Pro try and give the functionality of the Apple OS but in all honesty the ME Edition is more stable.

As you all should know I do not work for Apple but a pressure washer manufacturer. I switched to Apple for my laptop and have had no problems accessing required files on our network through Novell.

Besides, by any measure that counts in the real world, Mac's are easier to learn and work with and even in number crunching the full symmetric dual multiprocessing of Jaguar really flies. The only other OS to do that was IBM OS Warp a few years ago and Apple recognized the validity of partioning off 640k memory blocks for every open program to keep things speeding along. WinTel makes you share the same 640k block hence the infamous "Blue Screen of Death". When a program in Jaguar crashes you restart it and go, it automatically saves and does not take down the other open programs.

Oh yeah, there is one really neat feature of the Jaguar OS, you can save ANY file as a platform independent .pdf file through the Print command.

Hope this helps? Cheers,

Michael, Michael, Michael,

Did the Mac thing for about 15 years.

Replace 2 iMacs with 2 PCs in January 2 Pentium 4 models at my office a 2.66 Medion and a 2.2 Compaq.

I liked them so much I got rid of the Mac at home and replaced it a couple weeks ago with a Sony Vaio : Model PCVRG22 with an optional Flat Panel Monitor.

With the pre-installed Click to DVDâ„¢ software, you can turn your digital photos into a slideshow and burn it to DVD. Sit back and enjoy photos of your family and friends on a conventional DVD player. (Compatible with most DVD players.)

• Record and Watch Your Favorite TV Programs:
Goodbye VCR. Record and watch your TV programs with the Giga Pocketâ„¢ Personal Video Recorder. It's all recorded on the Hard Drive so no more fast forwarding or rewinding of videotapes!

• Innovative Software to Maximize Your Entertainment Lifestyle
The VAIO® RZ22G is packed with a wide variety of creative Sony Original Software including SonicStage™, MovieShaker™, PictureGear Studio™, and VAIO Media™.

• Built-In DVD+-RW Drive:
The industry’s first desktop PC with a built in DVD+-RW drive. Get the best of both worlds, “formats†that is. Compatible with both DVD-RW and DVD+RW formats; you can enjoy burning DVD’s without guessing which disc works and which doesn’t.

• Power and Performance
Featuring the Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 2.40BGHz, 80GB Hard Drive (7200rpm), 512MB of RAM, and GeForce4™ graphics card.

Now Mark...

You do realize that Macs have had the Superdrive for three years now, looooong before PC's could even support them.

Mac's ship with i... which do all of the things your add-on software does.

Plus new Macs support Airport Extreme (802.11g) which potentially transmit up to 54 Mbps, Firewire 2 (IEEE 1394) at 800 Mbps and backward compatable to Firewire 1 at only 400 Mbps. USB 2.0/1.1, Bluetooth and gigabit ethernet as well. Macs have not had serial or parallel ports for 4 years because they don't need them.

When WinTel/M$ provide an OS that does not require daily security updates, is stable, easy to use and not bloatware then I may consider going back to the dark side.

As you may have forgotten clock speed is NOT an indicator of performance because everyone knows that 'slower' AMD chips are faster in almost every case than the Intel chips with higher clocks. And even Intel will admit (grudgingly) that PIII chips in most applications are faster than P4 chips.

You'll be back to the light.

I have a Powerbook G4-17" that has a Superdrive, 17" widescreen, 1Ghz PowerPC running at 267Mhz, 1MB Level 3 cache (N/A on WinTel), 2GB DDR333SDR memory (WinTel can't support that much), 64MB DDR video memory on NVidia GeForce card and 60GB ultraATA/100 HDD. This connects via Airport to my dual 1.42 PowerPC whic features the same as above expect it uses the ATI Radeon Pro 9700 with 128MB memory, throws an extra 1MB on the level 3 cache and I have to watch it on my 23" flatscreen monnitor. By the way since I got OS Jaguar I have not had 1 security update in nearly a year and only 1 proggy crash. By the way my monitor supports 2 megapixel resolution so I watch HD signals from my satellite dish in a window on my workspace. Now if any WinTel box can do that seamlessly and as easily as I have then there is hope for the world.

Remember that Toystory (1 & 2), Shrek et al exist because the Mac is creative, stable, reliable and can crunch a lot of numbers. :p

If it looks like balony, smells like balony, then it probably is balony.

PC's dominate the business world. Period.

Macs will always be relegated to second tier.

Oguard,

$ for $ the PC is better for my applications.

:)

Glad you are happy with your Mac!

Gee how did we get here from my original question?

All I wanted to know was "Does anyone know of an upgrade from Windows XP Home version, to Windows XP Pro edition" is there an available upgrade that cost less being as I already have Windows XP Home Edition?"

Michael if it makes you feel any better I was in your corner 6 months ago, but now I have changed my opinion, nothing against Macs, my brother uses nothing but Mac's in his Digital Photography business, the countless Macintosh computers I have owned over the years gave me great service, and were a good investment, since I switched to the PC's I have not looked back, for me I feel the PC is the answer. Sounds like for you it is the Mac, great no problem I can respect that!

P.S. I am keeping a couple of my Mac's for my kids and will probably give one to my Mom, who uses an old Mac.
(Old as in Pre- G3)

:)

Lets just agree to disagree on this subject and move on. :)

NO problem but Micro$oft does not have an upgrade path from XP to XP Pro. You have to buy a new OS and instal it. Their reasoning is that they know what is best for you and you will either get one or the other not move from one to the other. It is in their best interest to do that because it involves more $$$ in their pockets. This is why I went on the tangent intially because the Jaguar OS does everything you want and then some without requiring an upgrade.

Cheers.

XP Home edition seems to be doing the job, I was curios though about the upgrade, and if it was a big enough difference to justify the cost?

:)

Have A Great Weekend!

The MAIN REASON I switched was because our accounting program MYOB Account Edge which we ran on our Macs, was terribly slow when networking, so we finally after 2 years of waiting for upgrades, decided to switch to PC's and then we
upgraded our MYOB software to MYOB Plus which is VERY SIMILAR but the multiuser version is REAL FAST on the PC's!

We have increased productivity dramatically since changing.

Well its been more than 5 years on the Sony Vaio
at home, I have new Dell Laptop for myself
and now considering replacing the Vaio at home.

No problems with it other than the fact that there are
faster computers out there now......... kids are begging
me to get a new PC...........

Any suggestions?

well after reading thru this I doubt I'll recommend the Mac...LOL Nope can't really help you with hardware these days. About the newest "pc thing" I have is three years old and doesn't even have windows installed on it. (yep the rest are macs) Good Luck though. I'm sure there's more that can help you.

Mark,

There are only minor differences between XP and XPPro.I have both (on different computers) and find one to be as good as the other. I see no reason to spend anything to "upgrade".
