Same here in DC Walt. Death of the dot coms has hit all high tech companies. Viable companies have been hit in the belt, even though they had good products. Their stock became over inflated and as a result we are seeing the layoffs all over. Many dot coms have shut their doors. The dot coms, were fueled by the day traders. Most didn't have a viable product. Some died in Beta, some in release 1, some on the white board.

I don't anticipate recovery for a year. I have worked in high tech since 88. This is pretty bad. Look for other sectors to respond first. Look for an increasse in consulting (independant) at lower hourly rates, as a result of layoffs. Look for more start ups in other areas....like ours.

I know of one DBA who went out on his own to consult, and is thinking about pressure washing.

Well Dell let go 4600 folks up in North Austin (my brother was one of them) he did consulting on the side and is now working for some other computer company. But the building industry has taken it in the ear. All the trades are letting folks go so things are getting tight.

Dell , and other central TX happenings

Walt, All of the DotCom businesses are feeling it. The squeeze that is. Ive heard Dell lays off regular employees and hires contractors. I see the reasoning . Cut your overhead. Brutal but a fact of life. If your brother is resilient as you are he will probably land on his feet.
Other happenings ....... you're a fisherman, yes? We went to Port O'Connor last thursday and friday. Caught lots of trout , brought home 10 keepers 17 -18" . Mostly wade fished in mornings and hit the wells at mid day. Worked the jetties in the evenings for Reds but only caught Gafftop. Going again after Labor day.
