Hello

Can anyone tell me how to get black carbon (exhaust) off of brick? The property is on a major four lane road and the red brick has accumulated exhaust and grime for years. A 2600 psi machine and many different chemicals didn't even lighten it. Do I need more psi? Any recommend on what to seal the brick with when I eventuallyget it clean?

Thanks!

With that kind of build up, an acid will probably be what you'll have to use. There are many different ones on the market. If Mark doesn't have what you need and gives the okay, I would be happy to point you in a good direction.

Thank You, I would greatly appreciate it. I'm looking to do the job this weekend so whatever adive you could give me would be most helpful.

I don't believe a degreaser will move the stain. An acid wash is most likely necessary. Look up ABR products. Masonry Cleaner and then their Hydro-Seal product. We have been doing a lot of brick lately and the stuff works very well.

Caution!! Test-test-test. Red brick is tricky with acid wash. If you don't have the proper dilutions & dwell time, you will either do nothing, or you could "burn" the brick & turn it white.

Good Luck!

Progress update on the brick

I tried some muratic acid today with just a garden hose and no pressure washer.
The good news; The acid moved the stain when I got a strong enough mixture going. The not so good news; The mixture began to discolor my pattern concrete driveway as it worked its way down from the brick. I'm wondering if a commercial strength pressure washer (4000 psi or so) would be the better choice or if I should just reseal my driveway (which has to be done anyway) and then complete the job with the acid.

Thanks for your suggestions!

More then likely when the brick dries you'll see the acid pattern on the brick too,a degreaser type product will remove exhaust carbon on brick better then acid without damage.

Unless you are really experienced i would try everything under the sun before acid. Acid can/will work, but it is arguably the trickiest cleaning method in our business. I suggest (Hot water + degreaser + 3500psi.)
