I got a call from a friend of mine that's manager of a gas plant in my area. He said he was wanting to know if I could wash some industrial cooling fans. They're about 15 feet high, 6 feet wide and look like a big radiator. Washing it's not the problem I can get anything clean....he said the last guys that washed it used some type of degreaser or something that foamed a lot to get the things clean.....The problem is I don't know what type of chem to use. Any idea on what type of chemical that might be?

Numerous products / soaps will foam,
you want to make sure you use a product
that is will not damage the material of these
fans / radiators.

Maybe a butyl based degreaser. [hello]

We call them cooling coils. The ones that we've done are usually very thick. The coils make several passes. Some have spaces in-between where debris can get lodged in place. The last coil we cleaned was 18" thick.

We prefer high volume (10 gpm or so) at 1000-1500 psi. Usually works very well. Too much pressure and you will bend the fins! In most cases we also run hot 180-200 degree water.

Here is a picture of the air handler that the coil is located. The air handler is on the roof 25 feet high and around 200 feet from the side of the building. The coil is located between the 1st & 2nd doors behind the ladder. We used both of our trucks hitting the coil from both sides.

If there is only dirt in the coil you may not need any detergent. When we use a degreaser we use the same products that we would use to go after petroleum and or vegetable/animal fats.
