Mahagony Deck

I got a call about a Mahagony deck that is one year old with a failed Cabot's semi-transparent finish. I read in the archives about the fact that Cabot's and other similar products won't penetrate this type of wood, but Super Decking stain and Ready Seal will. My questions are:

1. Will Wolman's or Cuprinol's Deck stripper remove this finish off mahagony?

2. If so, do I neutralize afterwards just like cedar and pressure treated?

3. Is there anything specific I need to be aware of when sealing mahagony wood?

Any input on this would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Chris

Chris,

I've never used either of those strippers, so I'm not sure............but, basically, you will strip and brighten just like any other deck.

If you seal with Ready Seal, I think you will want to use the redwood formula...........ask Peirce for sure.

Chris,
I have used the Cuprinol stripper with success before, but not the Wolman's. I would still neutralize afterwards. The Cuprinol has a Ph of 13.57. Be careful as to not let it dwell too long, it is very fast acting.
As for mahogany wood...you don't see too much of it in Pittsburgh area. Where in PA are you?

Good luck.

Thanks for the replies gentlemen, as usual this board has helped tremendously.

Ron, I got on the Penofin web site, and found it very informative. There is a supply store not too far away from me that carries the specific hardwood stain I need, and their price per gallon is 48$. Is that the going price for this preservative? Also, they said to wait a day or two to apply the second coat... is that accurate also? (I was told that by the guy at the supply store as well as reading it on the web site.)

Jordan, thank you for the info, I usually use the Cuprinol stripper anyway, so I'll just stick with that.

Thanks again,

Chris

i use red lable and have not used the type for hardwoods
whatever the price is on the web site is what the retail store has to sell it at.
no one discounts 1 price no matter where you get it.
make sure they put it in the paint shaker
put it on with pads, rollers, brushes if you want it to go farther then a pump up
but a pump up works very well
get a squirt bottle and a funnel to do close to the house then use the pump up for the rest.
i have my own ways of recapturing overspray from the railings cost about $30
