Paying Employees

I am about to enter the big bad world of hiring employees.....my time has come.

Those of you that have employees.....do you pay them hourly? Or percentage? I'm leaning towards hourly. I dont think I want them to know exactly how much money I'm making!

When hourly, do you pay them for travel time, or only time worked....or perhaps anything over 15 mins of travel?

Any insight to what you do would be appreciated!

Hi Mike,

We pay our guys hourly. We pay travel time, sometimes even pay them to eat the lunch that we buy! We hardly ever have anything less than 15 minutes travel, several of our jobs have a 1 to 1-1/2 hour travel time each way.

Mike, there are a lot of labor laws that govern the questions you asked. However you decide to pay them, you must make sure that it works out to at least minimum wage for the hours worked. You also should pay them for travel that's in excess of the time it takes them to get from their home to their "normal" place of employment. So, if you have a shop, or you work out of your home, that might be considered their normal place.

Call me or e-mail me...there's a lot more, unfortunately.

We pay $6.00 per hr., pick them up at their home, and deliver them back, buy lunch if we work through a meal time, we allow them to pick and choose the jobs they want, and the start times ( we have jobs that start at 6pm, 10pm, 5am, 8am, and on weekends). BUT, we only hire part time, in part because, if they don’t work out then we don’t have to pay unemployment.
Collage students make the best workers, not many business will allow students to work when they can. Final week is tough. High school students do well on weekends, keeps them out of trouble and gives them some spending money. Also, their parents work somewhere!
We have 3 crews and need another.
Before you start hiring, check your hourly pricing, you may need to increase your rates.
