HEY MIKE
Thanks for this article. please keep us posted if you hear or see how this guy Jeff Hoffman doing? it doesn"t
sound very good. we looked to see if he was a member of this board, but didn"t find anything. our thoughts and prayers are with him.

Just the other day we were removing peeling paint on a house, and when we got to the power-lines leading to the house,I had just told shirley we never want to clean around those, and we dont, its just not worth taking a chance, and we are not saying that this guy was
by any means. accidents do happen to everyone.

Mike,
Definetly keep us posted on this fellow powerwasher. Thats is a tragic accident that could happen to any one of us. Onetime I was powerwashing a house when the lighting company showed up. They just happened to be in the area. The guy called me to come down the ladder. He told me I was only a couple of inches from touching the wire with my back. He then told me if I was to touch that wire I would have nothing to worry about because I wouldn't live thru it.
Once or twice thereafter I had wires smoking because they got hit with water from my pw. I sometimes take to many risks but after hearing about this guy I will keep it on my mind and be alot more careful. Hopefully he pulls through. If you find where we could donate something to his family in this time of crises let us know. -John-

Most of the crews that work in and about residential areas should be aware of this hazard. My question is this; the lines from the street to the the house are these the hot wires he touched? I asked this question to a PG&E(West Coast) lineman and he indicated that only the main line with two uncoated wires are the ones that cause this damage. I do know that the wire to my house is coated and are not hot. These wires are right off my deck and last summer I inquired about the line. This was the story that they gave me.

It sound like he was at the street coming into the location of the house. I for one have stayed 20 feet away from this wire for 15 years and now even knowing that the wires are cold, I still stay back five feet, because of events like this.

Unfortunately, the man passed away. I believe our local news said he had burns so severe the Washing Gun had melted in his hand and the power washer melted and left a burn on the sidewalk. Definitley a wake-up call to all House-Washers. He was washing an Apartment Building in York, PA. Be safe. Don Farner

Wow......that's a shame.

I wish we could know exactly what it was that he did wrong, so none of us would ever come close to a repeat!

Mike posted that link on 2/15/01, my guess is that the links expired. (I saw it back in February)

I forwarded it to every contract cleaner on my E-mail list, who is not part of this board.

We take too much for granted some times, and we overlook safety at times. This should be an eye opener for all of us, to put safety first!

I am going to share this article with my employees.

In our are 95% of the homes and businesses we wash have underground wires so we tend to take for granted or forget when we head into an old area.

Fellow PWs, In response to the shocked Powerwasher. Please be careful while working around this stuff. The media reports these accidents as shocks, but it is ELECTRICUTION! "Shocked", seems to take away from the seriousness. Remember that most of the time the wire coming from the pole to the house is insulated but still dangerous. The insulation will brake down from u/v rays. For those who wash roofs and exhaust fans be careful while working around the "weatherhead" this is where the wire attaches to the mast on the house or business,at this point the wires are joined with bolted connectors or compressed sleeves and wrapped with electrical tape. The tape will weather and leave exposed energised metal, you can get electricuted or "shocked" bad enough to make you fall off the roof or die on the spot. Just a friendly reminder from someone who has lost a lot work companions over the past 30 years.
