Pricing on Produce Trucks

Orange crest, you are an idiot. You have been in business what, a year and a half? I have been doing this for 15 years, and have always made a good living at it. Telling me to park my wash rig for a price on something that you know nothing about other than what you read on the boards is pure crap. I can easily wash ten of those things on a maintenance schedule in an hour. That is $90., The catch is I will go back and do it next week, the next week, Ad Infinitum. Regular work regular pay. 52 weeks a year, I don't have to worry about the Construction market going in the tank and some dipwad newbie wannabe, like yourself, coming in and lowballing me because all of my customers except for a couple know that I show up, and that I do the work, and have for 15 years. They also know that if anything goes wrong with my machine, that I will be out in a couple of hours either repaired, or if it was something major, one of my other machines.
You slay me. If you knew what you were talking about instead of cutting and pasting from other boards all of the time, and had a few stripes from actual work time, then your opinion might matter.
I apologize to almost everyone that I might have offended. This guys statements have been nothering me for a long time, and I got tired of his idiocy,

Wow, I didn't realize my question would cause such a response!

Well, I told him I would do the job for $400 a month, washing them every two weeks. I took the advice of not giving him a weeking price, but did say if he chose go to weekly, I could give him a 20% discount....

It took me about 2 hours the first time I washed them.... and they were pretty bad for the initial cleaning.

Right now I'm making $200 every cleaning... ($50 a vehicle) If he goes to every week, I'll charge him $160 ($40 a vehicle). That would be $640 a month.

I'll let you guys know how it turns out...

Some guy called me up and asked me to wash a bench for him on Sunday... He was about 5 minutes away. I really didn't want to, so I quoted him $75 to come and do it. He took it (I should have known something was up...) When I got there, this thing was encrusted with mold growth... must have been sitting neglected for years. So I started washing it. It was pretty tedious... I thought it would only take me 30 minutes on the phone, but it took like 1.5 hrs... And this guy was CHEAP! He only had $20's and asked if I had a 5... I was like "I'll check in the truck..." I went to the truck, and all I had was 20's and a $1... He took my $1 and asked me to drop off the other $4 when I could. I thought he was joking.... Then he said if I helped him get the bench back to the back of the yard, we'd call it even. I found it humorous...

My other part time job is a rescue pilot with the Air National Guard... I fly enough to make a living doing that part time. But after I got back from Iraq I decided I'd like to delve more into the civilian world. I still fly, and basically just fill whatever holes in the schedule they have. But I just couldn't get over this guy and his $4, when he's living in one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in the country.

Anyway, I got another job offer to remove mold from one side of two condominiums in town... They are on boomers on the third story windows... The guy wanted me to use ladders to get up to the second level, then use another ladder on the deck there to get to the third... I decided to find prices for renting a cherry picker/boom lift... $150 for the day... So I quoted him $900 to do this job. It's not even that bad of mold, but I really don't want to do it. He doesn't want a contract, and he owns a lot of properties but has offered anything with regards to them... So I gave him that quote... Minus the equipment rental, that leaves me $750 or thereabouts... so that's $375 a building.... plus, I need to hire a helper... That will make the job worthwhile for me. Otherwise, I'd just go fly that day...

Soooo, I don't think I'm low balling at all... I felt like $75 was high for that bench, when in reality it probably turned out to be a pretty good deal for him... I personally don't think I want to break out the trailer and equipment unless I'm going to make at least $100 that day anymore. Does anyone else feel that way???

Yes,I feel that way..

Try booking 2,3,4 or 5 days ahead of time with the small jobs

I won't drop my hose's for less than $100.00/hr. The only exception being that of getting a new REGULAR truck washing account, as truck washing is my bread and butter. After the initial cleaning it's all up hill, week after week, month after month, YEAR AFTER YEAR!!! Regular weekly income. That's what has worked for me for 14 year's.

I agree whole heartedly with Larry. Why wash 2 truck's for $12.50 when you can wash one for $25.00 to $30.00! Robert you sound like a real helpfull guy, but brother you do not know jack about truck washin', surface cleaning though, you sound like you know YOUR stuff, but don't never tell a truck washer nothin' unless, in my humble opinion{ha ha} you've been a washin' for over 5 year's. Grave26, buddy you had best up that price on those building's because after rental fee's and paying your helper, fuel etc you are gonna take it up the hoop.

I would rather do 60 trks @ 12.50 then to do one @ 30.00

at least doing 60 of them @ 12.50 it is income to my business everyweek. And it is easier to maintain when they are cleaned on a reg. basic.
As compared to doing one then wraping every thing up then going clean across town to do another one.or worse yet only doing 2 or 3 in a week.

If you guys are getting 30.00 per trk. and they have 60 then I tip my hat to `ya.

You would be sitting home with your thumb up your butt if you were in my area.

I would be sitting home with my finger up my butt before I'd wash one for 12.50 nomatter if they had 2000 setting on the yard.

It would be harder then heck to get "me" to wash one or 1000's for even 20,I believe in being fair.

You talk about being eat up with it.....

I'm taking off for a week or two, maybe a month or two, don't know yet.Don't know if I'll ever wash another truck again.Surely I will but not wash as many as before,I need the time to pick and choose the ones I want to keep.I know one thing tho,"IF" I was "in your area" I'd be doing the same thing there as here :D.

Heck man I'm a salesperson not a order taker like alot of the wannabe truck washers, some got it some don't.

Yeah I hear ya "IF" in my area",,"IF" in my area",,,,I can tell by that answer most of you do not know your local contactors as good as you should. If you did you would be getting more by working together on the pricing.

I definatetly do not wash one truck here and one truck there, that would be bad business after just being plain stupid. As far as having accounts with 60 truck's etc I, personally would not want an account like that. I've had one that was larger than that and they took up all of my time and when they went broke, after I washed them for 5 year's, I damn near followed them. No sir, give me 10 account's with 10 truck's at $25.00[my basic price as I do charge more] anytime because that is $2,5.00.00 per week. Also if you lose one of these guy's your not panicing as much as if you lose your 60 truck account and you only have to replace $250.00 compared to $750.00

I know of most of the other local contractors. I think that there are around 300 of them in Fleets in my area. I also have to deal with Fleetwash, and a bunch of other guys that work for little or nothing and are willing to slit your throat for an account. As an example, 40 garbage trucks exterior wash raise box and clean chassis, and tilt cab and clean the engine. This includes pulling it to the wash bay about 1/4 mile away all for the princely sum of $8.50 a truck. I would be surprised if there is anyone else that has to deal with this kind of KNuckle head. He is broke and doesn't have sense enough to realize it.
Funny thign is that we went to a bid conference, and I had heard about the guy. I figured that I probably would not ge the bid anyway, so I started throwing bombs. He does not even use a soap other than Dawn to wash the trucks and never heard of an MSDS. They look terrible.
As for heat, nope, it isnot getting to me yet. It has been a cool summer so far. the highest we have gotten has been 105. That is unseasonably cool here and lasted for only a couple of days. Most days have been a spring like 101.

for a second there I thought the heat may have gotten to ya :D ,it may have gotten to me b/c I'm taking off for awhile.I may not have any business left when I decide to start washing again.I didn't tell know one I was taking off.If they cann't take a joke they can find someone else,I'll find me somemore :D.

It's ashame we have people like that in our trade, they should be horse whipped and their food stamps took away fromem. They'll work their hindend off while staying broke at that price. At those prices I'd fire all the employee's and turn into a one man team and just wash the cream of the crop,Less headachs.

Whats worse we have fleet owners that could care less what their trucks look like as long as they have a little water throwed onem at a cheap price.

The only thing I can advise is work together with a few contractors and put the lowballs out of business, rule the roost.
