Stamped Concrete

Anybody out there have any experience in removing stamped concrete stains or clear coats? The original person botched the job and the homeowner has no idea of what is on it. They want the original removed and a concrete stain put down. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

If this is true stamped concrete, the color is mixed IN with the cementuous mixture. I believe the same applies even with these new overlay processes. There may be a clear sealer to protect the surface which could possibly be removed (I would not want to begin to make any assumptions as to how to do that without damaging something!) But anyway, the actual color is likely not going to be able to be altered. There are other colored concrete stains (H&C), but they're an acrylic top coat sort of thing. I have no idea how they would look over or react to the existing stain in the concrete. The stuff we used requires a muriatic wash prior to using. You may need to figure out how to contact the previous contractor directly - might have to be sneaky :)

Thanks Roger,
I know about the clear and the mixing of the color into the concrete. I'm going to try a liquid stripper on it then acid prep and stain in one spot before we get too far into it. I usually use lightining strip. Tried blasting it off with a 15degree nozzle but it went VERY slow. I don't foresee any problems putting the stain over the concrete once we make it pourous. I'll let you know.

Yes please do keep us posted on how this works....this question comes up quite often (in other areas) but we've never seen anyone who'd tackled it in the end and reported the results!

Thanks :)

Perhaps the release powder was applied to heavy and a mild hot wash will clear things up. Is the concrete all one color, or does it have highlights? One color = no release, while highlights or shadowing = release.
Any Pics?

Definetly has highlights. Looks like they were trying for a yellowish gray and black highlights. Sounds ugly you should see it. Any way it's been raining everyday here since Saturday and not supposed to stop until next week. Hopefully I can catch a break and try that paint stripper. Thankx

Hey Lou,

Did you get an opportunity to work on this project further? We got a call to darken a stain on a stamped driveway - figured, no problem.....until wife told us husband put some sort of clear sealant on entire driveway. Having no idea of what type sealant is there, we're now looking for a stripping method. If we get the coating off, we're going to put down a darker grey.

jeep.

I recentely encountered a project that involved stamped concrete and had very little success as far as satisfying the customer because for whatever reason the cleaning process left the "sun affected" areas looking slighty faded. Be very careful with the amount of paint stripper you use especially if it is lined with grass on either side. Stripper will kill the grass if you dont take the neccesary precautions.

Good luck,

concrete stain

See thread on PWI under new homes pressure cleaning - "What happened here?"

What I have learned so far is that you can concrete over it with white "Shep-patch" from Shepplers concrete wholesalers. The patch goes on 1/8 inch thick and then you can put your texture into it - like deck brushing it for a brushed concrete look. You can also put a coating over it but it is transient and the same thing can happen again later. You can also paint it with a solid color white stain. There are concrete resurface specialists in the Yellow Pages that might be able to grind it down and resurface it. The last alternative is you can rip up the concrete and replace the slab.
