    Behr: Makes me go hmmm

I just finished a job recently where the customer had applied Behr Semi transparent. Soon after the application black splotches appeared on an 8x8 area of the floor. Behr agreed to pay for me to strip and refinish the deck with F&P. Did they do this because they're concerned for the...

    Surface cleaner on deacks????

Cleaning wood correctly takes too much finesse for a concrete cleaner. I just bid a deck that some clown used one on last year. I had to tell the customer, "Look on the bright side, you're the only person in your neighborhood with this unique circular pattern all over your deck." I hope she...

    Back brushing beats stripping!

Just a note to voice my gratitude for F&P. Now that many of my customers are ready for their every other year service, I'm learning the real value of F&P. The decks I do in F&P take a light wash and recoat and look fantastic! I'm starting to keep track of how many square miles of CWF and Cabot...

    how did you do it???

I was selling my 67 Camaro to finance my new venture and one of the tire kickers was a regional manager for Shell. He didn't buy the car, but wanted quotes on 12 corporate stations. "Man," I thought, "This business is gonna be really easy!" Then I had to clean them. So much for that easy crap.

    descaling?

I got some good advice when i bought my beast 4 years ago: always run the machine back to cold water. Don't shut down when hot. Turn the burner off and let the water run until it's all cooled off. I havent' descaled yet and she runs like a beaut.

    Residential -hot vs.cold water cleaning

If I have old finish to remove from wood i usually use heat as a second step, before I go to the stripper. It's less expensive, less time consuming and doesn't seem to wear and tear like stripper. On several jobs, the old finish (probably CWF) peeled up in sheets from the heat. I would argue...

    parking lot cleaning

Far too little information to give any accurate numbers on - and what we get in the Chicago metro area could be miles from what your market prices are. Here's a general answer that will help you very little: How long will it take you and how much is your time worth? Sorry to be vague. Get the...

    Stop Competing on Price

The bottom line is - do what's best for your business (and the mouths you need to feed). My prices go up and down depending on how much work I have. The bills get paid either way. The quality, however, remains constant. Sometimes I win, sometimes I lose. We spend alot of time talking price, I'd...

    2,000,000

My first year in business I was charged over a grand for a million of coverage by JD Walter's agency. The next year I found a local agent that set me up with the same coverages for under $200. Better service and money in my pocket. My point is, shop around. (and E me for my agents number)

    Cabot

We use cabot when the customer requests it. They usually say they saw good results in consumer reports. Cabot comes in a wide variety of colors and types. Oil base, water base, clear, semi, solid, etc.. The Solid and semi transparent I used last year required a 3 to 5 day dry time (before...

REPAIRS, this is a great add on if you want one!

I just added repairs and building last year. I use subcontractors. When your customer trusts you, and knows you're there to help them, they will allow you to "general contractor" the repairs or rebuild if the deck is beyond repair. They know it will cost them a little more, but are willing to...

    Flatwork and drive-thru lanes

This is the dilemma with regular commercial accounts. For a larger company with a crew and equipment to keep busy, this would be more inviting. There's a company in Chicago area that does all 40+ corporate Mobil carwash interiors. I put together a bid to get a shot at it and the numbers just...

    mounting equip. on trailers

Sounds like a personal preference question. How do YOU want it arranged. What's the best way for you. My trailer has my hot water machine in front, 500 gal. tank in middle, just over and in front of the axles, and my live hose reel off the back. The only thing to worry about is where is your...
