pump help

I have a small pw some one gave me. 5.5 hp 3000psi When the unloader pressure is turned down low it works fine but when it is turned up for more pressure it starts cavitating or pulsating. pressure is still there it just isn't a steady spray. Any suggestions.thanks

Are you certain this is a 3000 PSI
pressure washer?

5.5 HP engine and 3000 psi?

I know the engine is 5.0 hspower, as for the pump I'm not sure what brand it is . I know it is made in Italy and it has 3ooo written on the pump but nothing else that is recognizable. The person that gave me the pw told me it was a 3000psi pw. It is a Northstar brand. .By the way Mark I have bought some stuff from you before and you answered some questions for me that really helped me out. Your a knowledgeable man and I appreciate your info.Thank you for your help.

Do you have a pressure gauge?
Is it pulsating, cavitating or is
the unloader cycling?

Or am I just totally confusing you?
