acrylic finishes

Wow what a headache! I used an acrylic deck seal last year, and almost every customer has called me this spring to tell me that it is peeling off! I don't know if its OK to name the manufacturer, but the product is called Extreme. This stuff is flaking off floors like crazy! Is anybody else out there having this trouble?

Extreme

Haven't used Wolman Extreme yet but have used their other
products, (like the F&P and Brightener). Was considering
Behr or Flood for solid stains. Just wanted to add to your
question: What are the best acrylic/oil based solid stains
out there?

I have sold Wolman F&P for about 5 years now, it has been a Great Product, have never sold or tried the "Extreme" but I would think that if the problem is with the "product" that Wolman would stand behind it!

I suggest you contact the dealer / distributor you purchased the product from and ask him to contact the Wolman Factory Rep for you. Or contact Wolman yourself at: 1-800-556-7737

extreme peeling?

We have applied extreme several times without any problems. It is possible that you could have a defective product but initially I would tend to think it may be a prep problem. What is your proces for preparing the deck to accept the sealer? I assume the products was applied per directions.... 2 coats?

Additional info would help us to solve your dilema.

I wash with bleach and detergent (at about half-strength). I rinse thouroughly, and follow up with a brightener. I applied the sealer with a brush, and "finished" it with a flat stain pad. Two coats. Peeling only occurs on the floors, and only in some areas, not others.

Im assuming you used oxalic as a brightener?? Was the oxalic rinsed from the surface well?

I am not a big fan of cleaning with bleach.....we use percarbonates for cleaning followed by a oxalic bath and have never had a problem with the Extreme holding up. Unless there was residue left behind from the bleach concoction or the brightener I would say look further into the product. Ten to one if you call Wolman they will tell you you prepared the surface wrong (regardless if you did). Good Luck.

I've had good success using extreme. One or two problems when we finished the day after washing. Were the floor boards still damp or just a higher moisture content in certain areas??? When using any film building finish.... the wood must thoroughly dry before application. I lalso learned the hard way with extreme... sikkens.... etc... Have fun stripping it off.............

When peeling accurs it is because the chemical didn't penetrate into the wood. After cleaning the deck I would sand it with 50 grit sand paper to help open the pours of the wood so it can penetrate in the wood. Some peeling may occur, but not much. Peperation is the key. Good luck.
