I have a customer with some patio furniture made of "Australian something-or-other" (his words) and he wants it cleaned. I've seen a lot of this stuff and I assumed it was teak.

Two questions:

-What chem for cleaning.
-Must it be sealed.
-What is the capital of Assyria.

P.S. Yes, I've searched.

P.P.S. Those responsible for the last question have been sacked.

Sincerely,
Brig. Gen. DrWhipIt (ret.)

1. Don't know.
2. Don't know.
3. Assur was the capital of ancient Assyria. Located on the Western Bank of the Tigris River, north of the Little Zab River. :)

I have heard of Eucalyptus marginatus referred to as Australian Mahogany. Other than that, I got nothing.

All wood should be sealed. Ipe may be the only exception as it dosn't hold sealer well.

Ever seen an Australian Cypress floor?? Awesome looking!! Kinda looks like a really dense, knotty cedar. Would probably be my flooring of choice, were cost not an option. Does this look describe the furniture??? My guess is it is Teak, and they just don't know it.

He could mean that the furniture was sealed previously with Australian Timber Oil? That is what we have used in the past on hardwoods (teak and Ipe).

I apologize for the goofiness but I was hoping someone might recognize the Monty Python references. Oh well.

Anyway...

Grasshawg: Thanks for the geography refresher.
Pressurepros: You could be right about the mahogany.
Jon: Not a knot to be NOTiced. He swears it's not teak. The stuff is as hard as steel.
Rog & Celeste: I hope to find some of that oil locally. The stuff would really look great afterwards I'm sure.
SteveR: No.

My main concern is which chem for cleaning.

Hard as steel, no knots....I'd bet Ipe with Australian Timber Oil. If it's just nasty, I'd clean with a percarbonate, let it dry, reseal with Aussie Oil. You can get it at most quality paint stores (Sherwin Williams). It's made by Cabot's.

It's called Jarrah

Australian Jarrah wood is tough alright. Most manufacturers say you can leave it unfinished and it will last a lifetime. I'll bet it sinks in water too! I cleaned it with a diluted detergent and neutralized with oxalic acid. The owner said he's going to oil it. 4 rocking deck chairs and a patio table with 4 matching chairs. My back is aching from carrying the table off of the deck!
